CD-KEY Error

Unread post by Needsomehelp »

Hey Folks! I really want to try playing on your PW,

However for some reason I can no longer enter multiplayer, it used to work a few months ago when I last tried another PW, however whenever I try now I get an unregistered CD-Key message.

After doing some digging I found plenty of references to the nwn2cdkey.ini file that should be somewhere in my nwn2 folder (some references indicated it should be in documents, others in my install directory) however I can't find that file ANYWHERE. I even did a whole indexed search of my computer and found nothing.

I also tried creating the file from scratch using the references I found in various forums but even when i had it created correctly and saved as nwn2cdkey.ini (attempted in both the install directory and the documents folder) it still gave the same error message.

Reinstalling NWN2 after blowing away all references of it on my computer results in the same error all over again.

I am out of ideas and could sure use some help.

PS: Using the steam version of the game.

Have you checked under C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Neverwinter Nights 2?

That's where the nwn2cdkey.ini file should be located. You should be able to edit it by double clicking it, and then plugging in your CD keys?

Yep, the file does not exist in that directory. And like I said if I make it I get the same error.

Do you have three CD keys from Steam that you're able to plug in, once/if we do locate the file? It may be that you need to get in touch with Steam's tech support.

I don't have a Steam copy of the game, myself, though: Does anyone who does have a Steam version know where the CD key file is located?

Yep,

I have the CD Key's, maybe this will work.

I have been manually creating the file if someone has a CDkey.ini they could edit to remove their own keys, then send me that maybe the game would like that better? I could be making a mistake in the naming or formating even if I don't know how.

Create a new text file. Add the following

Code: Select all

[CDKEY]
Key1=*****-*****-*****-*****-*****-*****-*****
Key2=*****-*****-*****-*****-*****-*****-*****
Key3=*****-*****-*****-*****-*****-*****-*****
Key order:
Key 1: NWN 2 Base
Key 2: NWN 2 Mask of the Betrayer
Key 3: NWN 2 Storm of Zehir

Save it. Modify the extension to .ini

End result: nwncdkey.ini

Plug this into your base game folder (NOT your /my documents, but the base installation folder)

So to play here we have to move our nwncd keys from the documents folder to the game install directory?

So far as I can tell from my own file system here, it's always in the base installation directory.

Have you tried putting the nwncdkey.ini file in: "%My Documents%\Neverwinter Nights 2"?
These days, due to differences in versions of windows, games end up hiding their configuration files all over the place.
