Anti Virus

Hey folks,

I am looking to put an antivirus on my computer. Any idea what a good low cpu impact and low popup antivirus would be?

I use ESET. 2 year renewal at less cost that McCafee or Norton, with far superior quality, IMO. Also, low popups -- does most of the work in the background.

EDIT: It does have a high CPU impact during startup, which might make your bootup take longer. But once it's loaded, it's golden.

I'm using Avira. It only pops up once a week or so. Might be itself a virus though as most free Antivirus are.

It does not interrupt gaming in any way, and it hasn't slowed down my computer either.

Use windows defender as a basic protection.

Run Malware-bytes antimalware ( disable the run start with windows mode ) once per month and you will never have any problems.

RE: free malware/antivirus protection -- all I have to say is that, generally speaking (and up to a point), you get what you pay for. If you invest $0 into protection, you get exactly that. If you can spare $60 for two years of protection, you get that. The difference is how much work you want to do yourself, and how much knowledge you want to acquire about it.

There's a middle-ground, though -- Compaines like Norton and McCafee try to exploit fear of viruses, and use their substantial market pressure to get people to pay out the nose for a product I can only describe as "so-so".

I do use Windows Defender, and Windows Anti-Malware, and they do good work. This isn't the early 2000's Windows, where these ideas were a joke, and poorly implemented. They do work, so take advantage of them, totally.

But they're not perfect, and Windows is always under attack. So I use a little something extra to catch the things that filter through.

If it bears any weight, I have three friends who all do IT work for a living, and for separate companies. They all use ESET.

I've been told several times that installing more than one anti-virus program on your computer can lead to apocalyptic disaster and the loss of all morals. Is this not true, then, since some of you are suggesting using more than one program?

The additional program or app as they are called now, does have other effects than Windows Defender. And you only activate it once a month, after which you disable it again.

I agree, with proper surfing, windows defender does the job.

Most viruses and root kits are found in movies uploaded too soon after it's airing and in professional softwares. Streaming is legal and great. My little finger tells me the software devs aren't happy some people steal their work so they're the ones uploading them rootkits

Narrowing your attack vectors and keeping backups is a better long term goal with the mind that A/V will help but is only reactionary. Kaspersky is usually the top of the list for scan and remediation agents.
