Windows 10 instability

Unread post by ThornsM »

A new installation of Windows 10, all updates applied, all drivers correct and up to date. Runs without problem for all installed programs apart from nwn2.
The game rarely stays up for more than ten minutes before crashing, the toolset is just as unstable. Crashes citing faults in nwn2main.exe, nvd3dum.dll, audioeng.dll, d3dx9_30.dll, occasional IRQL not less or equal blue screens, permission errors for COM Server application.. all only under nwn2.

Anyone else have such issues or have ideas why it's so wobbly?

Are you using the Client Extension?

Nope. I've tried that a few times over the years but it always causes more problems than it fixes. It would introduce a level of lag and cause crashes when trying to exit the game.

Make sure you have 10 GB of space still as well available. Use the client extension.

With the toolset turn off auto saving to avoid crashes.

Other than that you can also run NWN2 in WINDOWS 8/7 and later as well to try and mitigate issues with the program.

There's 200GB spare. With the Client extension it still crashes the same, but has added lag, just tried that.
I've always got the autosave switched off in the toolset, a crash during an autosave makes quite a mess of the module.

I had it run fine on a Windows 7 installation yep, but no longer have access to that OS. On Windows 10, regardless of compatibility modes, it just keeps on crashing though.

Try running in compatibility mode with Windows 7/8.

With CE what windows you have open? I know the map caused plenty of lag on my machine. I only have the CE console and message window open beside the game and has worked for me.

Tried compatibilty for XP, Vista, 7 and 8 now. With and without full screen optimisations, with and without high dpi scaling overrides, as admin or not. Run it full screen or windowed too. None of these have stopped the wobbles.

Oh. You have the directx 9 or something installed on your machine? Though not sure if that helps any.

I still get some added lag with the map window closed. It is reduced, but noticeable and constant. If it prevented the crashes that'd be progress, but it unfortunately still blue screens at me.

NWN2 likes 9.0c. At least installing probably won't work without it. I had to install directx 9.0c separately despite also having newer one.

See for example https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php? ... ng-window/

May or may not help.

It did allow me to install direct x from the disk, but it did not help. The game dumped in a blue screen within two minutes of starting.

I JUST installed NWN2 on my new Window's 10 computer. Originally i used the link on the forum for the full game that includes all the updates. I was having issues with the game and the toolset especially. I am also using duel drives.. SSD for my C drive and a regular hard drive D. for Storage.

So I deleted all the files and started over. I installed just the first disk (if you have the disk that is) for the original game. As well as the directX 9 from the disk.... Then copy and pasted my NWN2 program folder and my documents NWN2 folder (that I had on my backup drive) over top of the ones the disk put on my hard drives.

It seems to be working fairly well with the client extension but crashes right away when without the client extension on... still trying to figure out why.

Hope this helps a little.
