Scrolls effects based on caster modifier?

Unread post by amber91 »

Some spells have effects or DC based on caster modifier (Int/Cha/Wis, etc.)

How does this translate to UMD scroll usage of those spells?

For example:
Bigby's Forceful Hand
This spell now allows a STR check every round to escape. The +14 is replaced with the caster's main attribute modifier (INT or CHA).
Now an assassin with +10 INT but no other caster class uses a Bigby FH scroll. Will there be a +10 to the check, or +0?

What about a bard with +1 INT and +4 CHA with no other spell casting classes using the same scroll? Will it be a +4, +1, or +0 to the check?

Thanks for any insight!

The DC on items should correspond to the lowest possible value for a given spell, ie for a level 7 spell the caster should have at least 17 in the casting ability hence a modifier of 3 for a total DC of 10 (base) + 7 (spell level) + 3 (ability modifier).

Thanks for the quick response!

So, if I'm understanding correctly, given the example of a scroll of Bigby Forceful Hand (level 6 spell), an ability of 16 is required for the original spell, so a fixed modifier of +3 is added to the STR check for the Bigby Forceful Hand when it is cast from a scroll, regardless of whatever ability scores (or classes) the UMD character possesses (because it's cast from the scroll).
