Favorite RP-only skill?

Unread post by gedweyignasia »

What are some of your favorite skills that are only useful in RP and DM events? Any exciting stories about using Craft Alchemy or something?

Sense Motive! It's great when folks actually play along, too. Great for DM events when the DMs give a bit of insight into body language or vocal inflections.

Unfortunately, I've had folks 'play along' and completely lie OOC. I know that no one's required to respond, but it's irksome when someone power-plays.

Honestly I enjoy when any clever use of a skill is accounted for in a DM event. Granted, I'm sure it is frustrating when a) players start making random rolls or requesting such or b) one player has a cool idea, DM says make an 'X' check and all the others in the event roll as well...But ignoring those inconveniences I have really enjoyed in events when I RP investigating an area and can use more than just spot/search. It's also nice when you can bluff your way past a guard or use survival to RP using the environment to set up traps and such.

I realize these are all not RP only skills, but I guess I don't see it as a scenario where mechanically valuable skills can't also be RP skills. However, since you did ask for RP-only, which means not mechanically valuable it should be noted that Craft Alchemy can be used to get stoneskin plants, as small a value as that is, it does exist on the server. Outside of the (non arcana) lore skills I'm not sure we have any skills that have no mechanical value...more just a case where some have very limited value on our server while others have a great deal of mechanical value.

Will admit playing a ranger recently in a DM event was great.

Got to track, search, spot, sneak, detect, all sorts.

Was good at some of it, not all of it, but really gave my character a sense of him doing something that was catered to him. Then when we got to the riddle solving/puzzles and impenetrable walls he also showed he had no business even trying to outsmart the wizards there working on the puzzle.

That was a lot of fun

Another thing to do is let others use their rp skills on you. As a example my character carries around a large book with lots of notes, sketches etc. If someone is close enough I will inform them if they wish and are nosey they might spot something with a okayish spot roll, depending on where they are sat. To make it more difficult if they are across from me you can reverse certain words if there spot is lowish.

Just use your imagination I say.

Lore and spellcraft is absolutely awesome. The prospect of finding out history on ancient times, items and obscure creatures of the realms really do it.

When your character learns this piece of information via lore and either covets it or shares the information with the party it could serve a vital role in the situation. This angle really reflects the intelligence or usefulness of knowledge without the need to be physically strong.

Spellcraft can serve a variety of situations, few times for myself in dnd its discerned magical traps and glyphs that could wipe out a few party members.

Though sense motive is another favourite.

CleverUsername123 wrote:Lore all the way. If you know enough about the setting to pull it off, a wizard with maxed Lore skills is a lot of fun to play. You can be a know-it-all and lecture random people on the Crown Wars and Gauntlgrym and the Plane of Shadow!
For extra fun, make sure you have low charisma and speech skills so you can make it really boring too

My bard dabbles in lots of things that tangentially interest her, which I'm simulating by spreading her lore skill evenly across all the categories, one point at a time (I bought four individual one-point skills at 1st level) - eventually bardic knowledge will pick her skill level up more significantly but for now it's fun to just have really vague knowledge about lore. Any skill that is used outside of the box provided by the game engine. Like to use pickpocket to put something into someone's pocket.

Yeah it's fun when people play along with rolls, especially to give more insight into a character. But they're not required to follow skill rolls. Been on more than one occasion that someone tried to steamroll their +60 skill on me in roleplay, which is irksome to say the least. That said, rules also say you gotta play like your sheet. If you're bad at lying (Bluff), it's never a bad idea to give -some- insight, or give your character a 'tell' that others need to figure out.

That said, does/has anyone ever use(d) Escape Artist for anything?
Yeah no, this place isn't worth it. I gave it one last shot, thanks to Wolfshear, but the Team Good bias is too strong. Enjoy the plot armor, the always winning, and roleplaying in a predictable world where char. development is nonexistant.

Enjoy playing basically Stardew Valley in NWN2, I guess.
