Hacker Alert: Someone Attacking Using Rania's Name/Identity

Unread post by taintedseraphim »

While RPing tonight I was informed that apparently Rania was supposedly off invisible attacking a group of low levels elsewhere.

Please be aware that its not me and Rania never shuts up long enough to attack anyone in stealth (She can't cast invisibility nor HiPS). I'm aware that this has happened to other players, so I thought I'd post a warning. I also have a screenshot to verify the player who was attacked and my location/rp.

Thanks.

I was the one who was messaging you. I apologize for the mistaken identity, but the server crashed moments later. Yes, there was an invisible player who was griefing my friend and I over and over. He then taunted us by sending a tell saying "thanks for the gold mate :-)". He may have some name-changing hack too since his name also showed up as Christen at one point. Unfortunately the server crashed and I exited the game out of frustration before I could get any logs or screenshots.

I play Nedrin Mooncloak, a level 5 wizard. my login is babuguscooties.

He cant actually take anything from you... at least not yet anyway. But hackers being what they are he may one day be able to. :geek:

Hi and no problem! I understand how frustrating it is. You can change your identification/gender with the disguise items but not sure if that is what was done or not. There have been hackers before who have completely assumed other character's appearances/names etc and griefed players. Hopefully this will let whomever it was know they'll be watched out for and they'll stop it now.

Welcome to the server regardless though! :)

Hi all, if you happen to come across something like this, please use the "party list" or check your chat logs (if you're using the Client Extender with logs enabled) so that you can find out what the person's username is.

If we can get this username, we're able to ban people like this from the server.

Unfortunately, there is at least one person, and maybe several people, out there who are simply dedicated to trying to bring down the NWN2 community for whatever reason (personal vendetta, slighted by the server "Illuminati," I don't know). But we will try to continue to keep them off of you guys. Just get us their usernames whenever you find things like this occurring so that we can investigate the matter!

Thank you!

Problem is: how do you know what name he or she is using? The attacks are perpetrated usually stealing another's identity. The only thing we could do is screenshot the whole player list and then compare it with the next incident.

Using the player list ( not the scry ), you can see the player name.

If they type any text, it will show their username in your chatlog if you have chatlogging enabled. If you don't, then it can take some detective work, yes (using the old-fashioned vanilla player list as mrm3ntalist says).

It's an unfortunate side effect of the disguise function (which this individual is deliberately abusing).

Ah, yes! The Chatlog does indeed give the original name. Forgot about that. Win for the client extension!

I should still have the history of the last incidents where Alyndra was involved. Let's see if I can get a name out of there.

EDIT: found it, who do I send it to?

Ok,,, is it a hacker, or is it someone using the disguise function to impersonate someone else?

These are two completely different things.

If it is a hacker, everyone should change their passwords from 1234 to something a little tougher.

NWN2 doesn't use passwords, it uses CD keys as authentication.

First, I don't think he/she does hack into existing accounts.

He/she hacks to give him or herself god-like abilities. Then he or she goes around in a disguised name (usually somebody logged in) as a scrying dot and killing, stealing and sometimes saying one liners.
Sometimes just trying to reduce the hp enough so that a chance hit by a npc mob might cause death and xp penalty.

Other times just interrupting rp.

Annoying.

Not reacting to the actions might be the best approach, but it is rather hard to accomplish. Especially if you get tells that ask why you just killed somebody. When the hacker is misusing your name.

Ok.

I believe this thread has run its course. Proper folks have been notified.

Please, in the future, refrain from accusations such as "hacker" or "cheater" on the forums. If there is an issue, please PM someone in the staff about it, so that we can handle things. Molehills and mountains and all that.

Thank you.
