Presently there are altars in temples around that whenever you pray to them, they donate to the god you're worshipping instead of the god of the altar presented.
My suggestion is to change it simply to the appropriate god. An altar to torm would give donations to torm. And if you are of the right alignment/deity thats not in opposition to the god donated to, you have the chance of gaining a buff. Perhaps even worshippers donating to the altar of their patron would perhaps have an increased % chance to receive the buff.
There's one snag in that not every altar in the game is represented, thus an idea follows further. A cleric can put down an altar, and consecrate it. Donations given would perhaps go to the cleric consecrating.
Any developer interested in this?

Re: Donations to Altars - Change to matter
I like the idea of consecrating or desecrating an altar, and being able to accept gold from it (25 per prayer? Making it slightly cheaper than the NPC ones) in exchange for small buffs (like the current altars).
That would allow players to set up their own functional altars. Something I've always wanted to happen!

this sounds awesome. what a great idea.
some ideas to add to concept:
-have a few tiers of alters that give better or more frequent buffs according to the tier of the alter. the higher tier alters have a more detailed look in game and cost more to make. basic, elaborate, exquisite.
-when building an alter, have it roll against your lore: religion skill and if you fail it takes your money but you dont get an alter. higher tier alters have a higher DC to create. the procedure takes 5 rounds to build a basic, 10 rounds to build elaborate and 20 rounds to build a exquisite.
-upon creation, the alter will have a radius of an appropriate buff only effecting PCs that follow that god. higher tiers have higher buffs.
-the DC to desecrate the later is based upon the builder's roll to build. ex. you try to build an exquisite alter and it has a DC of 50 to create. your modified skill points are 42 so you roll a 12 so your alter has a DC of 54. to desecrate the alter you would walk up and R-click the alter and choose desecrate alter. then you would roll d20 + your lore:religion skill and if you exceed it the alter is destroyed.
-the alter would also be able to be destroyed by bashing it. the alter would have the build DC*10 HP's. basic alter would have not have a DR, but an elaborate alter would have a DR 5/- and an exquisite alter would have a DR 10/-.
