You should be able to change the name as long as you haven't actually bound a being to the gem. If you can't that is a bug.
You can't. You also can't if you bind and the gem is not strong enough. You get a warning but the name is stuck so you simply have to blow up the gem.
If you know two names but only have one rare gem. Bind one and try it out, unbind, then bind the other. The focus is not really meant as an actual item, but rather a representation of the deal you have with a certain being. The gem is consumed in the binding process.
Maybe then make it tradable but stick it with the same rule as runes. Or script it so that only the player who created the gem can use the gem.
You don't have to pass the diplomacy check to convince the being to be bound to you. How well you do in the check will determine the gp price that the being requires for its services.
That's good. How about bluff roll for bypassing the alignment restriction?
Powerful outsiders can ignore your spell. A bound outsider that is capable of planar travel can escape your binding at any time, unless you cast dimensional anchor on it. The outsider can escape your binding, so it is dangerous to keep it bound for too long. Get an agreement for its services or let it go.
I mean, the planar binding series is not powerful enough to contain those "powerful" outsiders as its targets in the first place -mechanically it can only target up to 18HD-. In its targeted power level, unless they resist the spell they are forcefully called.
dedude wrote:Planar beings can be killed on the prime, or any other plane. This obviously makes it harder to agree on a dangerous deal, and the outsider is not going to go to his death for you. Treat your RP accordingly, it's poor RP to just let a called being die. They control their own actions and would most likely never go to their deaths for you, nor agree to a service that includes their death. The exception being the Gate spell where the caster actually controls the called being (in the version of the gate spell we use). In this case your alignment may dictate how you treat the outsider.
I agree to some extent, I don't think any sane person would 'let' their bound outsider to die. What I mean is to threaten the bound outsider to agree upon your deal, which I can see many evil aligned would do and even neutral aligned, depending on the nature of the bound creature in which would make more sense to use intimidation rather than diplomacy for such cases. That is why I think would be better to have a social skill check depending o the circumstance then exclusively a Diplomacy check to determine the price for the deal.

I know the title of the thread seems to target the planar binding spells, but the system we are talking about to call named planar beings includes the Gate spell. Which has no limit on HD.

Oh, wasn't aware that they were disabled in the loot table. That is fixed from next update. They are of course in the rarest gem tier, but they can actually drop now.
They need to make PB allow all summons again... there is no reason why a true neutral could not conjure a demon or angel if they wanted to. Planar ally ok, that is being sent by a god so of course what can be summoned will be limited. But PB should let you summon whatever as long as you are willing to take the alignment hit if a dm notices you doing it.
Also, only three neutral summons... seriously?

Far as I can tell, they're trying to make summoning a streamlined process that doesn't require constant DM hand holding. As has been pointed out, dealing with an outsider that's a polar opposite of your alignment has serious consequences that could only be dealt with properly in role play with DM assistance. Don't forget the server can have up to 90 players on at the same time and it's hard enough to handle things as it is.
We just need to be understanding that some limits are put in place not because of lore or even balancing but to just make it so the DMs don't have a lot of "busy" work to deal over what we really want: immersive role play.

I like that suggestion as a compromise. Next update you can trade/store them if you are doing an RCR, as long as you keep the same name. You will also be able to write a new name to the gem if you misspelled it. Already bound gems are unfortunately already flagged as un-tradeable.

Thank you, this might help a little. I don't recall when I've seen someone sell a blue diamond but I heard someone bought one for 250k. A little pricy for a fancy planar binding!

I wouldn't expect that price to change to much. Canary's have been sold for 80k lately, Names 150k. Blue Diamonds will likely be rarer then both.
I'm glad to hear this system is seeing some action, and names have already been found. Exciting stuff.
If any of you lucky conjurers would like to give some feedback on the system, please send it in a pm to me (don't post here so the info gets metagamed). I would like to know how the name was obtained, which name you found, how the binding process went, and any other notes you would like to share.
i have questions on this as well. does the name come in book form and has a long story attached to it that clues must be deciphered to reveal. or is it simple and titled as to not be confused with any other nameless book that details some random lore or fable? perhaps it is not even a book but a scroll. are these books only found on the highest tier loot tables or are they included in most loot tables? maybe the lesser ones are found in lower tier tables while "gate" names would only be found on end game tables.
