The low AC will still get you in the end. You'd essentially be a glass battering ram. Sure, it's a great build for scripted mobs, but players will trounce you if you go melee. Everyone knows to ignore the summons and go for the summoner. Far better to stay back and sling your attack spells. You have to reach the glass cannon first before you can shatter it.

If you select Horned devil or Nightwalker shapes then you've got respectively 35 and 31 base AC, add mage spells AC buffs ... AC is not a problem, not for all the shapes.

But wait!!

We were talking about Polymorph Self, not Shapechange. Big difference between a Lvl 4 spell and a level 9 spell.

I love polymorphing, but there's only like 3 forms that are useful (Devil, Nightwalker, Troll; in that order). There's really no reason to pick most any other forms, that's the problem though. With no forms to measure up to, everyone defaults to the best. I never see anyone turn into a spider, a giant, the golem, and especially the mindflayer.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more forms and more Arcaners turning into something different, myself included.

More choices would certainly be good for everyone, however don't expect more power because there's already plenty with the existing shapes imo :) (and yes Steve the level 4 spell polymorph self eventually becomes obsolete but I don't see people casting melf's acid arrow or summon monster level 4 and expecting those to be efficient at level 30 either).

Can anything be done in the code (because you guys are experts) about having the polymorph count bonus spell slots in equipment (for wildshape too).

I would love to polymorph more, but losing 7-10 spells everytime I do it is very high maintenance. Would be a great quality of life fix.
If the text is this color, I am on duty, everything else is just my humble opinion.

My point was that Polymorph Self (D&D 3.0) and Polymorph Other (3.0) were merged into simply Polymorph (D&D 3.5). That spell, Polymorph, allows for up to a 15 HD shape, and, I would assume that a 15HD shape/monster would be worthy to a Lvl 15 wizard/sorcerer, until...Lvl 18/19 Wiz/Sorc gets a their first Lvl 9 spell pick, which could be Shapechange.

So, in the Best World Possible scenario, a mage would only experience 3–4 Levels where a shapechange spell did not match their HD/Level power (as in 1-to-1).

THAT is what I'm promoting, and wondering, if is a) in the realm of possibility, and b) is not-to-far-off-the-rails-to-get-the-BIG-SHUTDOWN-from-QC. Hi QC!!!!! ;)

Mindflayer should actually be one of the most interesting forms. As I've been told, you gain all the abilities of the creature including telepathy and brain sucking. Polymorphing in NWN was a lot more useful because just about all of them got special abilities with the form.

Something like this has already been coded and should be working for druids.

If one could confirm this, it would be an easy addition to polymorph and shapechange.

before adding more forms it would be nice for the existing forms to be made more useful. As Valefort said we don't want them to be more powerful than the existing 'top' forms, but that doesn't mean we can't make them just useful enough to bring them in consideration or perhaps just situational useful spells.

That would be awesome, and...what I'm thinking/hoping Nachti is looking into (based on small convos with him).

I like to think that low level spells shall continue to have general usefulness, in the life/Level of a mage, especially for Sorcerers, who get "locked in" in the choice department.

Of course, there ARE scrolls and elixirs, which if possible to have Polymorph and Shapechange versions of both low level and Epic level CL, THAT would be also great.

Make Polymorph (spells) great again!! ;)

This would indeed be nice to have, if possible.
