Fighter/Paladin?

Unread post by CleverUsername123 »

How bad an idea is it to put a level of Fighter in a Paladin?

I don't know 100%, but I think fighter compliments almost any feat-starved class simply bc of all its bonus feats. So yeah, like maybe 6 levels of fighter or something would allow you to get more feats without losing BAB. Afraid I'm no expert on builds though.

I wouldn't take more than 4 levels of Fighter, because of my desire to reach caster level of 30 with Practised Spell Caster feat. Thus, one of the 3 bonus feats you get is basically spent on Practised Spellcaster.

However, you do get the free Tower Shield Weapon Proficiency, on top of three fighter bonus feats. So I think it can be very much worth it, not to mention that most Paladin orders do not mind multiclassing with Fighter, if you want to be a bit of a PnP purist.

If looking for feats you can also consider Hospitaler, which improves upon your Caster Level (6/10 progression) and has 3 bonus feats over 10 levels (same amount you would get for 4 levels of Fighter, but two of them can be epic feats, vs. only 1 for Fighter). Unless you specifically want Weapon Focus/Weapon Specialization + one more feat I would rather go hospitaler or 4 levels of Divine Champion over Fighter.

Note that Paladin has a unique spell book that, while certainly great for a CL30, if you wanted to build the old P20/DC10 you certainly could. You just need to be more gear dependent and mostly use your spells for short term buffs/boss fights, not worrying about dispels. Can't dispel EDM/Great Smite, after all!

At the same time, you lose 3 epic feats from epic paladin levels. And you have to spend one feat on practiced spellcaster. So what's the point? :P

26 paladin, 4 annointed is good.

Tower shield. blind fight, toughness, tumble and spellcraft. and a +1 elemental dmg aint to be frowned at imo. Especially for trolls

And fits the rp.

If you need/want something extra in pre-epics there is a place for it, such as the discussion we recently had around a Weapon Master Paladin.

If you are taking another PRC such as Morning Lord of Lathander it is a way to get two of the 3 lost epic feats back.

There are some reasons you would go Hospitaler, though admittedly in most cases it isn't a great choice...Neither is Fighter IMO, AK is better in every way, Divine Champion can make for a better smiter as well.
