Background:
Rayn was born in a the city of Luskan to a middle aged ship captain and his young wife. While his early childhood was mostly uneventful, Rayn's sorcerous power showed itself at the age of seven. Rayn quickly picked up magic, and devoted the remainder of his youth to studying the arcane arts. By age 18, Rayn was already serving as a navigation officer on his father's ship, the pirate-hunter Kepesk. (Storm)
As a young man, Rayn was much healthier and stronger. He fought against many pirates and smugglers while serving aboard his father's ship, all the while using these combat exercises to enhance his spellcasting. Fire had always been his specialty, and could absolutely cripple an enemy vessel if the sails were targeted. Rayn was an agile fighter, using axe and spell to bring down his foes.
By age 28, Rayn had risen to the rank of first mate onboard the Kepesk. The crew was on the tail of the legendary druid pirate, the Kraken King. The ensuing battle cost the lives of almost everyone involved, as Rayn and the Kraken King's magic clashing warped the weather into a terrible storm. After a prolonged battle, Rayn sustained a very serious wound to his abdomen by the King's blade, and he was thrust into the roiling waters.
Sometime later, Rayn awoke on a frozen shore, bleeding and alone. He was shortly found by a group of Talos cultists, who attempted to sacrifice him to their god in the midst of the massive storm. Rayn was tied to a lightning rod, and the storm raged around him. He was struck by three bolts of lightning from the sky, yet somehow survived. He had lost vision in his left eye, it going a blue-white opaque color. The cultists believed this to be the birth of Talos' Avatar, and that the end times would soon follow. Rayn did not quite believe this, but took advantage of the situation to keep himself alive. He later discovered they were in the Icewind Dale, and stayed in the village that the Talos cultists came from. He spent years there, recovering from his injuries and being treated like a prophet.
For the first time, Rayn was able to manipulate lightning. He wasn't sure what to believe, but knew he needed to find answers. He left the village with a cleric of Talos named Skaadi, and traveled south along the Sword Coast.
