Should Horrid Wilting heal undead?

Unread post by Rinzler »

Almost all other Necromancy spells excluding death magic heal undead. I'm curious why Horrid Wilting does not. More curious rather than an open suggestion.

Pretty much. Its the negative energy thats providing the healing factor for undead while positive for the living.

Horrid Wilting is supposed to suck all the hydration from the body and that's where the damage is coming from.

Not sure if it works on undead, it probably shouldn't.

"Sucking Hydration" sounds like negative energy to me.

Think about what Horrid Wilting does.

Does that sound like it should help undead at all? At most, it's useful in preparing a body to turn into undead later.

But it does nothing that would make the undead cling to its unlife harder.

Directly conjuring and injecting negative energy helps. Using negative energy as a conduit for a physical change doesn't.

It may not help undead but it definitely should not harm them.

Horrid has no effect on undead, specifically states so in the spell description

It should not be acid damage. It is damage incurred through the draining of moisture from the body; that's not acid.

In 5e the description specifies that it deals necrotic damage, which is negative damage. So it should deal negative damage if it were to deal any specific damage type. But in 3.5 there is "untyped" damage, which is what 3.5's horrid wilting deals. That's probably why they went with magic damage for NWN2, to replicate the untyped aspect.

It's most likely magical because it's not met to be resisted by energy immunities, similar to extract water elemental or drown

Untyped damage is classified as magical damage in nwn2. Same as with extract water elemental, bard's inspire courage, disintegrate, etc.
