Drow attitude toward spiders?

Unread post by Pimple »

In this stickied thread the book "Drow of the Underdark" is cited, but the version for 3rd edition intended for D&D in general rather than the Forgotten Realms specific 2nd edition. In that version of the Drow of the Underdark as quoted in that thread it is stated that there is no taboo about killing spiders if you yourself are drow.

All I could find of relevance in the 2nd edition of Drow of the Underdark does not exactly contradict this.

"The reverence of most drow for Lolth causes them to at least refrain from attacking spiders out of hand, and this relative safety, plus the large amounts of ready food that large settlements generate, has caused spiders to gather and live in the drow communities and drow-controlled areas all over the Underdark."

This phrasing could mean there's a significant different in view between Lolthite drow and non-Lolthite drow. It also doesn't sound like it's completely out of the question for a Lolthite to kill a spider. So my question is this!

Since that thread is stickied, is the lore of the 3rd edition Drow of the Underdark meant to apply on the server? What is the lore appropriate drow's view on spiders and killing spiders and snacking on spiders, among both Lolthites and non-Lolthites? And is this any different in Sshamath?
"They're just furry and misunderstood."
"Is that why you are killing them?"
"Yes. They will atone in death."
"Ah. That will help them understand."

Drow of the Underdark is a general 2e/3.5 D&D supplement source material that can be used when creating or devising your campaigns within the D&D realmslore. However, we are on Forgotten Realms game setting, and Forgotten Realms more often than not has its own unique rules or traditions that are followed throughout Faerun. As such, every Forgotten Realms specific material takes precedence over any general supplement sourcebook that may or may not state some things otherwise.

If I recall correctly, Menzoberazzan Boxed Set and Demihuman Deities state that it's a great (often unredeemable) sin on Forgotten Realms for drow worshipping Lolth, Lolth allied deity or in society dominated by the Spider Queen's rule to kill any spider.

For Sshamath, a city where Lolth's rule and worship is not on top of the society life, killing spiders may be acceptable to those that don't worship Lolth. Her worship extends over 18% of both moderate (regular) and devout worshippers, while Vhaeraun takes 12% and Mystra 11% of Sshamath's worship. Sshamath is generally a melting pot of all kinds of faiths as shown here, and there's a good number of people that wouldn't have a problem with killing spiders.

However, Lolthite traditions have the biggest population, and they've always influenced drow. I don't think they'd eat any spiders or serve them to eat, though occasional killing them (not in presence of any devouted Lolthites) may happen and not be persecuted by Sshamath's law.
