So, loot drop, or library....
you can buy them or find them.
"Read" them, and get +1 to a corresponding lore skill.
To stop feat spam per book, have the first one be common, inexpensive. It would qualify you to read the next one, which would qualify for the next, etc, so your feats could be swapped, and so you could get the bonus only once from each book. The first book would require say 10 lore in the subject. Acquiring 10 would get you the "student of X" feat. once the book was read, that feat would be removed and replaced with "expert of x" feat. after that would be teacher, guide, professor, master, dean, etc etc what have you.
If you try to "read" a book out of sequence, you get "you have not read enough on this subject to understand it". also, the books would have higher lore skill checks in their corresponding subject, So the other message would be "you do not understand this subject enough to understand it"
I would say 4 - 8 books each subject, with the later books adding +2 lore, and the final book adding +3
Just for fun, final book would lead to a knowedge point quest. super high lore check... awesome lore item or feat with actual benefit.
Right now, lore skills are mostly RP, there are a ton of them, and it costs a lot to dedicate to even one. I don't see a huge balance issue with this, but people love permanent skill increases, so the books would be very valuable, and a gold sink.
yeah, that'd be cool.

Re: Epic books of lore (gold sink)
In the past, permanently increasing stats outside level ups, were always denied. I dont think this is different.
Especially considering that dms regard lore skills so much, that the bardic ability got nerfed, the lore skill was split into many skills and the spell legend lore was also nerfed.
Highly unlikely.

they have been split now. the idea is to help speciaalize and gold sink.
and i understnd why perm stat buffs are denied, its just lore:local is now 1/6th what generic lore used to be, but still costs an entire skill point.
