Monstrous Companion Change

Unread post by Flasmix »

I love the Monstrous Animal Companion. I love how it starts as a kobold, then becomes a goblin and moves up to Orc, gnoll and even an Ogre. I thought the Grey Orc with the scythe looked really cool. He's the Level 27 companion, I really looked forward to seeing what the level 30 companion and the 33 one is (For Epic Animal Companion) and... I'm a bit disappointed.

Okay, I'm very disappointed. It's a fat little Hagspawn that holds its mouth open like a slack jawed yokel. When he was the Orc one, I could at least get some good RP off that as I'm an Orc PC myself so we'd make jokes off each other with the same awful accent.... Even the Ogre was easy to RP as. A hagspawn? Geez, they're just... boring.

This is a requested change for cosmetic and RP purposes. The level 30 and 33 companion are both the same thing, while on previous upgrades they'd change races. If possible, I'd like to propose some alternate race options for the Epic Animal Companion, level 33.

1) Minotaur - They're already monsters in the game. Being able to have one as a companion is awesome. (Bonus points as they're already considered 'Monstrous Humanoid'
2) One of the Giants - Giants are cool. The monstrous companion steadily gets larger as it levels up before peaking at Ogre, dipping down to Gray orc with scythe and then again shrinking down to fat little hagspawn. What about a Hill Giant or one of the other Giant-kin? Fire Giant would be awesome too.
3) Yuan-Ti - A snake guy would be pretty cool and plausible.
4) Kobold - No, I'm serious. We end where we began, but this time with a bad ass kobold of DOOM. It would be so cool.

In essence, please change the level 33 version of the monstrous companion. The Hagspawn looks terrible and isn't fun to RP with. I can see it for one level, but not for two :(

Personally I would rather choose what type of humanoid it is also I wish they would add slimes as well. Druids being allowed to pick drow gods would be nice for UD characters as well, not sure if the lore supports it.

Personally, I always found monsterous humanoid a little harder to RP, since it was always changing.

"What happened to your kobold?" "Vanished."
"What happened to your orc" "Uhh...burnt. Killed. Whatever."
"What happened to your ogre" "I..uh..he left me for another."
"Did you kill your lizardman" "No! He...died...hunting!"
"Nice hagspawn. He really is representing that 2 CHA isn't he?" "Shaddup."

But anywho! This is waaay down the list of priorities (I understand the devs have quite a bit on their plates already), but personally I'd like to see if you could get a menu open up when you log in with a monstrous humanoid, from which you can choose from a list of monstrous humanoids. The current level progression could be kept (no issues with that), the issue is purely a cosmetic one. My 2 cents.

More variation is always nice, but its ever-changing nature is a little odd. And I liked the lizardman :'( Made for some interesting RP. Rest in piece, Sadhe the Lizard.

Lol it's a bit easier for me to rp. "Yeah his training was complete so he's off doing Bregan Daerthe work. I'm dealing with this new guy... Hagspawn, thinks he's a cat... Meow's a lot."

what I'd like to see is a domain that allows for monstrous humanoid, and have animal domain NOT allow monstrous humanoid. But I bet that would be difficult to script.

So, I just created a Druid and picked this companion. An idea I had was to create two choices, Reptilian humanoid and Goblinoid companions, Or simply have the choice between a kobold companion that gets better equipment and states and a goblin that does the same. When your companion changes race every few levels it's not easy to roleplay convincingly

played through monstrous companions once. and agree 100%. the changing through the differing monsters was fun. once. now i get one i like and wish i could just keep it. i liked the gnoll best. it was really fun monster RP. same thing with the kobold, but it was so short lived its hard to quantify.

my opinion would be to start with kobold and add a selection with each step of progress. so you can keep the kobold and it levels up normally or you can move up with the gnoll when you get that second stage. this gives the fun of progressing the first time while giving players the option to carry a comp that fits best up.
