God Modding ... does a NPC have to be present?

Unread post by Thayvian »

I mean could a PC qualify as an NPC if no NPCS are present?

Should the rules really change just because ones an NPC or PC?

Just curious about rule clarifications.

No, because the idea of godmodding is that you are making decisions for the NPC. A PC can make decisions for themselves.

If I fight in front of a PC, they can decide whether to help or not. An NPC can't. So, fighting in front of guards is godmodding, because the guards would step in, but can't.

Same with saying that someone said something. Saying "Bentley gave me permission to cast magic in the FAI" is making a decision for the NPC. Saying that a PC said something could either be true, or a lie. But it advances RP, and affects the trustworthiness of your character.

You can also godmod other PC, ie stating how they would react to something.

*His fart smells so badly that it makes [other PC] hairs stand and vomit*

It is up to the other player to decide how his character would respond to the fart.

Yeah, he might have lost his sense of smell and therefore be blissfully unaware of the stench. ;)

That is a good point, too. I don't remember who, but there was a character who in their "examine" had 'auras', and tried to tell you how you would feel around them. This is a form of godmodding, but is not as severe, as it can be ignored by others.

Ignoring is too good for it. Instead you say something like, "What a heavenly smell! Reminds me of my dear, departed mother; Moradin rest her soul." *sighs contentedly*

I usually take that kind of info as helpful suggestions. Can't remember anyone trying to force me to play it like that.
"They're just furry and misunderstood."
"Is that why you are killing them?"
"Yes. They will atone in death."
"Ah. That will help them understand."

A good example of godmodding would be for instance, if someone were to pull out a crossbow in the Friendly Arm Inn courtyard, shoot a chicken, and then say that the guards were used to seeing things like that. Hypothetically, of course...
