OOC meta gaming using IC items.. Immersion breaking

Unread post by Thayvian »

Hello I've been running into a lot of merchant characters recently that seem to use in game items to refer to OOC game mechanics such as listing.

"Examine player for list" well that's out right breaking the third wall and immersion.

I don't understand how this allowed? It clearly is not in the heart of role-play and makes the game mechanics very obvious.

Again i would stress that I use an in game character description to describe items I might be carrying or that is at my stall but I try to maintain that suspension of disbelief.

Not a rant.. just curious if anyone else finds it immersion breaking and thus offensive to Role play? I know there are many instances of other game mechanics that also ruin immersion.

This one however is glaringly obvious that it breaks immersion.

I really don't mind if you have merchants but as a merchant character.. I put a lot of effort into maintaining the role playing aspect. I have very little interest in profits as the soul driving force. So much so that it's starting to break immersion.

I strongly feel this the wrong direction to go with merchant characters and it seems to bother some other people I've talked to.

Were that the case we would have to adjust the NPC merchants.

Were you able to edit full descriptions of placable signs and save it with the same ease as the editor for the character, you might see a change. Also, items you drop dissappear on a crash. You don't want to have to make a new list each time, or lose an item. They could do much better with the way they present an ooc direction granted.

The issue is if you put the available items in the description of a placeable and someone accidentally picks it up, that description is lost and you have to start over. By putting it in the character description you can be sure it will stay.

I don't find it to be an issue as some things need to be done for ease of use. After all, I doubt most people playing the game want to spend their hours re-typing the list of 100 items available at their stall.

Perhaps not listing items and encouraging roleplay instead ? I don't see an issue with simply roleplaying out what you have. My "Customers" Ask me what I have for sale I find they enjoy the Role-playing aspect of explaining items and services I carry. I don't feel it's tedium in the least and enjoy every detail of the process. Encouraging all around me to roleplay.

My issues is not so much with the description on characters. But the In game Items asking us us to examine others. << The item like a sign telling us to use game mechanics In character. It's immersive breaking.

You are instantly aware that the sign breaks the third wall. And reminded you're playing a game instead of part of a story or fantasy world.

I also find it funny. That OOC tags and chat bother players like crazy but this.. oversight does not. That makes no sense to me either.

 still easier just to put it in your description so anyone interested can just examine.

As to immersion breaking, how are you to know what you're getting without some level of meta knowledge being used. It's easy to say Greater or Epic X for items everyone knows, but if selling a RIG item with +4 EB, d4 bonus fire damage and some other stuff it can get a bit difficult. How does one IC'ly describe d4 bonus fire damage vs. bonus 1 fire damage?

You don't and it's simple you say this one is "better quality" by a few tiers...

And I have no issues with descriptions as long as the Pc follows a roleplay friendly format. But I do have an issue with the signs telling you to examine a PC for a list.

Ease of use should always take back seat to immersion and roleplay on a PW roleplay server.

Right away it ruins the fantasy.

I would conclude that I am more than willing to give up in game props to ensure this does not continue to happen and stand by what I say.

I would also suggest that merchant characters require Dm approval imo.

Anyways thank you for listening.

i downloaded it.

im looking for a non-proportional font ascii convertor. If you know of one...

i guess AOL had one a long time ago.

but, it is easier to run a stall, and edit your item list while waiting for the odd customer, than typing out on notepad, and then entering the game.

Well your not wrong. Why is that only the OOC tags anyone cares about however? And the clearly OOC signs in game used by players to "Look at my PC for a list of items" Is ignored. I don't understand the outrage of the OOC tags. Yet the lack of Outrage over the above list. Or the Sign(prop) in question.

I find it very hypocritical and really baffling.

Why care so much about one and not everything else.

I feel people only care about the rules. And Nothing at all about RP but simply whatever they can get away with In game that does not break the rules. << And I have seen over 30 examples of this in game.

Doesn't break immersion for me, I understand it gives a sake of ease moment. So to each their own I guess.
