Parry

Unread post by Thorsson »

Perhaps it's me, but I thought I saw some indication that Parry has been changed, but there's nothing on the Wiki.

Can anyone clarify whether it has been changed and point me to where it's detailed, if it has?

For sake of covering all bases,

what was changed was that Parry is used in 2 different ways to gain Deflection AC.

Way 1: One Weapon rolls randomly to grant you deflection AC based on parry.

Way 2: Duelist 7 grants you 1 deflection AC per 6 ranks. Yes, this means you can get 5 deflect AC without any items.

It should also be noted the Parry Mode can be put to great use with the new combat modes.

Deadly Defense
One Weapon
Sembian Fencing
Athkatlan Triparite

Note that you can use EITHER One Weapon OR Sembian Fencing OR Athkatlan Triparite, they can't be active at the same time. However, Deadly Defense is usable with any of them. s Since Parry limits your attacks (Ripostes) to 3, there is no real penalty for using SF or AT.

So while Parry itself has not changed since you played Thorsson, there have been some additions that make a Parry based character more interesting.

Does that stack on top of any deflection item you have equipped ?

One Hander: .......a deflecting sweep (1 Deflection AC, +1 for every ten parry ranks)
hmm, so if i have 60 parry (with items), would it grant +7 deflection AC for a round ?

Ranks, not modifier.

Ranks implies you took it during level ups using skill points.
A modifier is rank + ability mod + other buffs

I'd say Duelist 7 is better for deflect AC if you can spare it. 30 sp for 5 Deflect AC.

So the gain from Parry is now more like that from Tumble - you can gain direct AC.

So Duelist can now gain up to +10 (I presume Dodge) AC from Int at level 10 and also 5 Deflect AC. An influx of Duelists looks likely then...

Thanks to Hoihe, aaron22 and chad878262 for the information about how it's now useful.

P.S. I guess that Duelist I have hanging around somewhere is now pretty tasty.

Yup. If you also consider duelist grace, dodge and One weapon, Tumble, ICE (with Deadly Defence) a Duelist has 37 single target naked AC.

A duelist. has. 37 AC without any equipment, just some random 1 finesseable weapon in hand. Not counting dex

(10 base + 10 int + 5 deflect + 1 dodge (single target) + 1 dodge (single target) + 6 (ICE) + 3 (tumble) + 1 (one weapon))

Can get it up to 42 with 20 dex! Then add the usual worn items for ridiculous AC while wearing a loincloth.
