Background:

Tobar grew up in the Dalelands, raised on the stories of his ancestor, Heron Suresteel, a warrior whose sword never missed its mark so long as its mark was wicked at heart. He is credited with having single handedly resolved numerous threats against innocent people through the Dales a few centuries ago.

The people's reverence for and knowledge of this figure faded in time, especially as new heroes such as Elminster rose in the Dales. Tobar personally loved the stories and wanted to be a hero when he grew up. Unfortunately he began to manifest arcane powers and this required a lot of dedication and instruction to get under control. He would have rather used this time to become stronger and learn how to properly sword fight. But there is only so much time in one's youth.

Tobar came to accept what he was and the necessity of his sacrifice through conversations with his elder brother, Rolf, who is sworn to serve Torm. Tobar began to see the lessons as an important duty because without them he could accidentally hurt people. Later as he became reliably able to shape force itself as a weapon he began to think of the power as no different than a sword. That which stops evil stops evil.

Tobar's relationship with his arcane mentor, who simply went by the name Belzerath, improved as he made these personal developments. Belzerath had been part of their village since before Tobar was born. He was one of many Arcane Scholars who left Candlekeep to spread knowledge of magic to the world and learn more of magic from the world. Belzerath settled in this town because it had an unusually high number of Sorcerers. He was needed and it was a mystery worth investigating. He never pieced together this phenomena could be explained simply by knowing that Heron Suresteel retired in that village, started his family in that village and was more than what he seemed.

Belzerath, having known the comfort of being surrounded by friends, family and grateful students on his death bed, now rests in the village cemetery. He wrote a journal over the years detailing his life in the Dales, his occasional adventures and the insights about magic he gleaned by training so many young Sorcerers. Belzerath's students agreed it made sense for one of them to bring the book back to Candlekeep in thanks for his lifetime of valuable service. Tobar and Rolf agreed it made sense for the two people who really cared about duty to get the job done. Travel is dangerous.

They joined a trade caravan that started somewhere before Shadowdale and would end somewhere after Baldur's Gate as guards, figuring that a good way to earn coin on the way to their destination without having to slow down. Toba was the one who mentioned the book on its way to Candlekeep, so Tobar blames himself. But truthfully, it is the man who decided the book was worth killing for who is to be judged wicked by Tyr. The thief accidentally woke the two brothers up while robbing them and a fight ensued. Rolf wasn't wearing his armor and was stabbed as he jumped out of his bedroll. That didn't stop him from getting his sword, especially with Tobar providing a distraction in the form of a summoned wolf. The two brothers (and a wolf) dealt with the thief handily and spared his life. But Rolf kept bleeding. And bleeding. Poison was stopping the blood from clotting. Rolf's blessings weren't enough to deal with the problem and Tobar watched in horror, unable to do anything as his brother slipped away.

Tobar wept and then raged and killed the thief with arcane force.

He has arrived in Baldur's Gate with the book and with mixed feelings about duty.

Goals:

Deliver Belzerath's writings to Candlekeep.

Honor Rolf Suresteel, who joined me in my duty willingly as a brother and died for the trouble.

Honor the memory of the great hero Heron Suresteel.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:

Heron Suresteel was a polymorphed Gold Dragon.

3/6/2018 Update: Tobar has teleported back to Heron's Hollow & Shadowdale after his long journey. He learned that two of the apprentices he trained with have joined the Zhenatrim. They are Drem and Hivar, DMs are welcome to assign these NPCs to Darkhold and use them as part of a plot.
