Dms active? Enforcing rp?

Unread post by justcametomind »

So I will try to ask again but nicer I guess since my last post was deleted for no reason.....

Are the dms here still enforcing pretty strict rules?

I left the server 2-3 years ago when I had a dm pull me aside and tell me my character can't have social interactions or friends on the server because my class was stormlord and they were set on the idea that stormlords don't do that sort of thing.

Do rules or ideas like this still exist are the dms actively enforcing these sorts of things? Just want to know if I can try some of the new stuff without getting a headache.

never heard of this before, so.... i guess you will be ok. i can only take your word on this so far as the situation you describe does not sound very par for the course.

guessing there is more to this story...

just a guess

Not really no, I played a warlock stormlord (Kana) who would sit around the fire on the coast and talk with people most of the time. Dm messaged me one day and said 'you can't do this, you are a stormlord go kill stuff and let your 'friends' see your character act properly according to RP' for a lack of verbatim. Told me I need to rp killing in Talos name etc... Basically said I can't be nice to people or sit around and socialize. - which is a massive problem if that is the case. Hence why I left for several years, but I would like to see some of the new stuff without worrying about bs like the above example.

im not a talos aficionado so, are you breaking the ethics of a talosian? are you not playing your sheet? there has to be something. seems unlike what i have seen in all my time here. only been here <2 years though.

Well I was stormlord with favoured soul prereq my argument was I didn't choose cleric specifically because everything here http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Talos mentioned clerics or priests.

'Worship of Talos was outlawed in many countries. Most Talossan holy sites were secret because of the church's reputation. Public churches often took the form of castles or fortified strongholds that lay on earthquake fault lines or in the path of storms or lava; Talos ensured they remain unscathed.'

Rituals revolving around Talos:
'Calling Down the Thunder – This ritual involved the sacrifice of an intelligent being by lightning.'

'The Fury – This was the ceremony in which the cleric prayed, made berserk attacks to wreak as much destruction as possible in a small amount of time, then prayed again'

So here was the issue. I wasn't sacrificing 'intelligent beings' or randomly destroying stuff while openly praying to a god that could have gotten my character in trouble around BG.
I was sitting around and talking to other PC's; about in game things, and in character of course. Seemed like a bit of a rock and a hard place when I was confronted about it however. One side says you are not playing a stormlord correctly and the other is getting my character removed from all in character circles I was a part of because I was forced to choose talos as my diety.... I never acted out of character IMO and to go around randomly praying to Talos and killing things on a routine sacrificial basis would have been altering/breaking the rp I had built around my character.

I have played on a host of other pws since BG and 'playing your sheet' generally implies play your alignment, not 'blacklist yourself from all IC interaction because you chose Talos as your diety... Scratch that you were forced to choose Talos because you wanted to make a stormlord'

I never took the time to resolve it when it was an issue because I was left with a resounding 'do what I say or I will remove your stormlord abilities' I just stopped playing (was busy with IRL at the time as well)

Divine RP is enforced (and to be a stormlord, you need to have divine levels!), but it seems very odd that a DM had told you that your character couldn't make friends. I wouldn't worry about that at all, if I were you.

Basically, the DM team expects you to RP a divine character according to the teachings of their patron god - or at the very least not against those teachings. So no sadist, psychopathic ilmatari paladins and no charitable, freedom fighting clerics of Bane.

DMs sometimes enforce player RP (especially of certain dogmatic classes like paladins) but usually in more constructive ways and this is the first I’ve heard of something like this happening.

As per the general server rules (see link in signature), if you have a grievance against a particular person, do not express them in the public forums as it makes it difficult for the people who can do something about it to help you in the matter. Normally these grievances should be sent privately to the DM Team over the Private Messaging system (with as much detail and evidence as you can get), but as the complaint is about a specific DM you should send yours to the Head DM group.

(The Private Messaging system should also have a message from the moderator who was responsible for removing your old topic.)

For now I’d recommend you play in the server anyway. A lot has changed in 2-3 years, especially the DMs, and there’s a lot of new things to cut your teeth into. I’d recommend consulting the wiki or Tips and Tricks subforum with regards to changes as some new abilities were introduced and some existing ones were changed.

Locking this topic for now.
