Knowing Lore:Arcana without skill ?

Unread post by Twotricks »

If character does not have points invested in Lore:Arcana

What are his options for identifying items ( except vendors )

Identify spell works for single item. So its not very economicaly viable. How about potion ?
Does it identify while inventroy ?

Is there some other option ?

You can open a barter window with another player, and if they got Lore: Arcana, they will identify items for you. (When they check the item.)

But the merchant in the Easter Farmlands, and the one in Soubar all identify for 25gp per item. Basically, in the long run, you will not be losing money even if you get few steins or what not every now and then.

There is a spell called: Legend Lore, but I have never bothered to use it.

Paying money at vendors to identify is kind of against my idea to invest in appraise instead of lore. Since instead of making money i will be losing it.

How about potion of lore ? How does this work ?

It only pumps up your lore skill for some time ? How much ?

Is it enough to identify everything ?

How much points in lore is enough to identify stuff ?

Equipping two +5 Lore:Arcane rings will often do the trick. Lore potion is maybe +5 skill. Buy it and check?

Asking others is usually free. If you can use wands, a Wand of Identify isn't a bad investment if you don't want to pay merchants.

Ok..i found somewhere that regular skill check is around DC15. Potion gives I think +6 for 10 minutes. Equiping items can boost it further.

And if you still can ID it, it means it is expensive anyway. So its worth spending few coins to ID.

And yes, master rogue. UMD is my top skill

Keep an eye on the auctions, rings of insight show up there from time to time and they're fairly inexpensive.

If you equip one you have enough lore to identify the low tier trash stuff at the least.

My concern is that, back before the split of lore, everyone had just basic +lore.

Now, there's all sorts of lore. how would someone be able to redistribute the lore points they had originally invested that covered EVERYTHING, into the new(Old now) subcategories?

You know, only on the Coast would that have needed to be said. :?

With the old lore skill, people were already dividing their singular lore skill into different fields of 'lore' - because actual 'lore' skill check DCs are not that high. For example a skill of 5+ already gives you a 50% to beat the common DC of 15.

Now some DM can require higher skills, etc... But usually a sky high 'lore' skill only grants additional details based on a roll.

Just to inform you of results.

I bought two rings of insight +4 to lore ( each was 2000 gold ) my class give me access to fox cunning +4 int spell. This is usually enough to ID 99% of finds. Whatever is not identified past this is sure to be an exceptional item. For this identifying at vendor is ok. But I also have potion of lore that with all this combined comes to 100% chance to id anything

I guess you could have done that. But when you think about it, you will need to ID 160 items with just the rings to make your money back. Not including the resources you spend on Lore Potions.

Friends and vendors are probably the most economical way to go.
If the text is this color, I am on duty, everything else is just my humble opinion.

I probably ID around 20 items a day. At least.

And skill points i would invest in lore i have invested in Appraise. So its win win
