Is it possible to become a lich as a player character?
As the subject - Somehow I reckon one would not be able to on this server as it would have some real issues. According to the nwn2 wiki, it seems its actually possible, the question is if its actually possible on this server, and if so what does it actually require?

Well, it IS possible, but your PC then becomes an NPC and can potentially be placed as a boss in a dungeon.
Wirg to Pug: "Iz lat dun?"
Pugratix to a snarky militia man: "Mmmm. Not yet. I will live for hundreds of years and be heralded as one of the greatest forces of destruction on the face of the world. The only thing you can destroy is the outhouse."

It can be done as a retirement-type event, but actively played PCs cannot be liches.

I know of one character that successfully became a lich, but was simultaneously retired.

Re: Is it possible to become a lich as a player character?
Why would anyone work at becoming such if not being able to play the power they've become?
I can see why it could cause balance and rp issues, but is it really necessary for it to become an npc or have it retire when its achieved? Why not have the player be co-plotting with the DM's in relation to the character's overall scheme of things? Personally I think player driven plots and rp really can be some of the greatest rp created. Furthermore, when characters become this powerful they have the power and ability to affect on much larger scale. Additionally I also think that player character villains should also be possible to play, where a lich certainly would be one of the most powerful ones possible to play.
There are certainly things that could be put in place to make it much more reasonable to allow such power to remain in players hands - like for instance permadeath, or that certain guidelines on how to play such character be followed, an if not the character could become subject to becoming an npc or face retirement instead.
Disallowing player-controlled liches - not being playable is a waste.
Also something consider - factional wars, like good vs. evil. Like if someone became a lich they would end up on the evil side.

Re: Is it possible to become a lich as a player character?
I would like to role play an undead mage too. Acually an undead dragon a Dracolich! yeah, that's what I want to play.
But neither of then are what are considered to be player character races. They are refered to, in d&d as monsters. Monsters are npc's. Therefor lich's and dracolichs are npc's.
Becoming undead in game is treated by d&d rules as being a bad thing to happen...go figure.
If you become undead, you become an npc and have your character taken from you. It's almost like permadeath.
You stated you understood the balance issues so I do not need to explain why monster races are hard to treat as player characters, especially something as uber powerful as a lich.
You don't need a lich to rp an evil toon.
You don't need a lich to start a player driven plot.
People may rp becoming a lich as a way to end thier character. It's simply going out in style basically.
Nothing is wasted and much more is actually saved by not allowing players to rp liches or dracoliches.

If your end game goal is to be a strong PvP mage, there are ways to do that without trying to get the benefits of being a lich.
If you're really into the undead thematic, I'd say making a pale master is a fair middle ground.

Best Lich is a cleric.
No, no playing a lich here.
There are other persistent worlds that allow you to play monsters as a PC if you wanted to go that route.
Sorry to confirm that bad news.

A lich would not have the freedom to roam the cities and its surroundings. See how many guards and knights are walking around? It's even worse than an orc or a drow. Instead, you would be subjected to staying inside your tower/lab/cave for thousands of years preserving your existence and deeply studying arcane magic, which is no fun. The other day a PC ran by with a summoned skeleton and everyone started an uproar about it. Think how they would react when a lich walks by.

Re: Is it possible to become a lich as a player character?
The primary reason is 'play your character sheet'. Without a lich PRC (like they have on Sigil), players who wish to RP towards lichdom cannot afterwards roleplay their character on BGTSCC because they're RPing things their character 'does not have' in a sense.
And I doubt any lich PRC would ever get added because arcane spellcasters are already powerful enough as it is.
I would personally approve of IG (ie, playable) lichdom if the player went and put significant effort & time into roleplaying towards that end (minimum 2 years IG presence & associated RP). The DM team is unlikely to agree, however, as it creates its own set of accusations of 'favoritism' and what-have-you. Thus making PC retirement the only option left for PC liches (of which our server has seen several over the years!)

Wrong. In tabletop game, players can become liches and play them by the rules. Process of becoming it and creating a phylactery is discribed. Actually, it is quite popular in evil parties.Tekill wrote:I would like to role play an undead mage too. Acually an undead dragon a Dracolich! yeah, that's what I want to play.
