Question about Tracking, Disguise and Appraise

Unread post by Twotricks »

I am thinking if there is point investing in these skills and how much points.

1. Tracking
Do you need to have tracking feat for tracking to work ? Or is putting points in Survival working as well without feat ? And if yes, how much points you need in survival to be able to track enemies in the game ?

2. Disguise
For roleplay purposes. But if you have the spell, do you need the points in the skill ? And how much so it would be valid ?

3. Appraise.
How much points you need in Appraise skill to get reliable 30% discount as advertised. ANd does it also incease money you earn when selling loot ?

Pretty much yeah, otherwise you do not really see many brown blips on the map. Only humans and animals/vermin I think. As for what is high enough survival skill, 10-15 is pretty solid on its ownright. More is better, but you can make do with 10-15 and this includes bonuses from items.

I think the spell uses the disguise skill somehow. I would max it, because it is mostly used against other players or something.

Just max it, either class skill or cross class skill. The higher your appraise, the more money the NPC merchants tend to pay to you. Although, it does not increase their max buyout prices.

Ah damn... that survival are wasted points than. Since I can not waste feat for tracking.

So just max disguise and appraise , most of all

Cloak of the Elven Kind has the track feat, you might see it in the in game consignment store for 2-10k usually, or get it from random loot.

I am not sure if the Elven Merchant in the Woods of Sharp Teeth has any item with the Track feat... Not sure, so I guess it is one place to look out. (Watch out for orcs though.)

Higher the appraise the more you receive from gold piles as well.

There are weapons with Track Feat as well.

Plus appraise lowers price of purchasing cost. On one PC I am only paying 540 gold for a 10 pack of healing kits. While on another (with high charisma) he is paying 750 gold (no idea why since the "normal" price is around 650).
If the text is this color, I am on duty, everything else is just my humble opinion.

Appraise is INT based skill.
And the rolls and price differences aren't fixed. They vary depending upon the appraise check roll each time you encounter the vendor.
And I think there is a cool down (hidden) between rerolls.

There is also a helmet with track on it last I checked, available in Baldur's Gate from a merchant near the auctioneer.

You can read the mechanical details of the Disguise System here. The 1st (or 5th) level spells Disguise Self (Other) Take 10 and then add your disguise skill for the base DC, in addition to the other bonuses/penalties described in the link above. The more disguise skill the better.

I have noticed that there is a limit to how cheap items become when you buy at certain stores with high Appraise. For example, items at the Thayan Enclave did not become any cheaper when my Appraise skill went above 74. The maximum threshold is probably lower, but 74 Appraise is when I started taking notes.

It's weird though, because the Thayan merchant's prices are way higher than other merchants. Robe of Eyes, for example, is way cheaper in the UD (and in Avernus, when you could still buy it there).

Is that unique to the Thayan merchant?
