Good/neutral summoner?

Unread post by Muckluck »

Hi there,

So I'm back to some serious altoholism, and after funking around with my cleric a bit (my highest at 5 :P), and realising summon creature spells are actually good in BGTSCC, I was thinking about a summoner-type character. Now, the thing is... I don't like Bane and/or similar gods, so I'd like to avoid the dread thing (dreadmaster, is it?) build.

Any suggestions for a summoner build that isn't built on it?

Just include Thaumaturge and epic spell focus conjuration in your build... could also go for techsmith of gond, though the gondsman isn't really a summon so much as a construct.

Could you give me a good example build? I'm guessing base wizard with focus conjuration and Augment Summon?

Yep. A simple W25/T5 would work. I'm away from my laptop right now so can't Give you a full build... could consider adding frost mage for beckon the frozen .

Augment summon is granted free at Thaumaturge 2. Here are the class requirements
Race: Any

Alignment: Any

Skills: Lore: The Planes 8, Diplomacy 6

Feats: Greater Spell Focus Conjuration
Your summons will last twice as long and you will be able to simultaneously have a summon creature and a planar binding creature out at the same time. Cleric spell list will benefit from having better buffs for your summon while Arcane spell list benefits from having additional planar binding spells.

Since the server has a custom summoning system you are going to want to invest more than 6 ranks in Diplomacy. Invest as much here as you can. You will roll diplomacy against a high DC when initially summoning via true name to negotiate cost of continued service. This makes ASoC and Dragon Disciple appealing PRCs for a Thaumaturge.

e: as an aside in case you didn't already know, command your summons to attack hostile spawns in their sight by typing vwe

http://nwn2db.com/build/?284874 Bard 4/Sorcerer 11/Thaumaturge 5/Stormsinger 10... Perhaps it might not be the strongest build, but I just find the concept of it rather amusing.

A Valefort approved Wiz/Techsmith/Thauma - Gnome Version; Human Version. Has 2 permanent summons (Cohort + Gondsman) + double duration regular summons. You can drop rogue for a bonus wizard feat at 15th, but I made that build to be an absolute master tinkerer (60+ disable device score).

Rogue/Wiz/Thaum/Tech is a pretty good combo as well. You can actually disable any trap out there and open any lock.

People keep saying that Gondsman is good. I haven't seen it yet. Compared to a normal summons post level 15, you get 2 attacks, then eventually 3 at level 19 (go in the order listed for classes). My weakest summons has far more attacks per round than the Gondsman and does way more damage.

But the Gondsman does have like a 35 base AC I think. So you can get the AC up to 49. Wait, that seems too high. Maybe the AC is 30. Anyways with +14 AC to buff, plus stoneskin, improved invisibility, etc. it can be a decent tank.

I do not know if all the bugs were fixed yet, like losing the weapon it is equipped with on a server reset.

But if you want to be a "summoner"....

You have a familiar, Planar Cohort, Gondsman out 24/7. Then you can also use a Summon X (or Gate) and any of the Mass Summons Spells, like Airball or Metal Men, etc.

That is a lot of summons.

PS - Do not leave your familiar out. It hurts when it is killed. Literally.

Gondsman is a tank, so it shouldn't be doing as much DPR as other summons that are not as tanky.

I think there was a thread about 2 weeks ago stating how the Gondsman needed to be nerfed because it was too strong for the CR.

I know I will have to get to my mid 20s to make that assessment, I'm still not convinced at 19.
