Background: ((Public info)) Thedran "Appeared" on The Coast with the return of First Company from Chult. He was a member of the rather infamous "Norton's Bastards" and was the youngest and by far least experienced soldier of the cohort. Under the watchful eye of Captain Norton and the various sergeants and a particularly nasty corporal. Many things were in motion at the time, namely the return of a Bhaalist Sect. Thedran's unit was seen posting guard watches around the newly built orphanage and walking patrols along the southern trade routes. The event ended with his cohort being dispatched to an unknown location and task. Thedran was the sole survivor to return to the city and earned his name during his attempted report, as Captain Norton noticed that his throat had been cut.
"My gods the lad is made of stone!"
"The Rock" was coined as his nickname amongst his fellow soldiers. During his recovery, his severe injuries explained his discharge from The Flaming Fist. Still recovering he turned up a second time, as a soldier in the employ of Sir Jonas Rokranon. No longer in offcial standing he continued many of the tasks that originated in The Flaming Fist. He looked after the local orphanage and was commonly seen hovering around The Living Saint of Ilmater.
During this period Thedran's tasks were very straightforward as were his methods. He was the protector of Sir Rokranon and The Living Saint, but more importantly, it became noticed he took a great care of their families. There were many conflicts, some rather minor and others left swaths of corpses along the road. Too many adventurers he became a sufferance, he gained a reputation for what appeared to be mindless savagery, yet he never seemed to fall out of grace with Sir Rokranon or The Dukes. There was one curious location were he was strangely adored, Mercy's Orphanage and The Sanctuary of Ilmater. The heavily armed man was often seen in the city and was known for taking the various orphans to temples, festivals and other outings that were suited for the children. He occasionally brought children back to the orphanage, though he never spoke of their origins, many of these events were marked by heavy damage to his armor and even his person.
After several months of being the caretaker of the two families, his life was changed by the return of The Red Wizards. Under his watchful eye, both families were packed and took ships to the south. Some of the orphans were taken along, though the orphanage remained behind.
With the departure of Jonas and Meri, Thedran took up care of Mercy's Orphanage. He often barred adventurers from the grounds for what seemed to be groundless offenses, though his choices were never questioned publicly by Ilmater's church, even when complaints were made. He spent the next several years looking after the children, while he maintained their security he also looked to the finances and also the education of the children. He arranged apprenticeships with various tradesmen and even certain adventuring factions. Candlekeep, certain druids of the forest, and many paladins over the years were often seen in and about The Orphanage after their presence was requested by the Thedran. Aside from two very incidents involving enemies of extreme and ancient power, the orphans of the city were left in peace and never was one harmed under the care of The Rock
These were the years of Thedran's rise to infamy. Many were killed along the road and even some in the city. His name was known to many Baldurians and while few feared him, few spoke of him with kindness, though those that did were without hesitation and would often never explain why. He became a reckoning and protector of his people, dragging back wanted criminals and standing in the forefront of many battles that decided the fate of Baldur's Gate.
Adventurers in large part despised him, there were often accusations of murder and claims of other crimes, though none were held against him within the city. In fact, he was often seen entering and exiting The Flaming Fist's stronghold and speaking quietly with the officers.
And with the coming of Zhentil Keep and the shadow upon Triel, there came whispers of a dark enemy in the city. Thedran was known to have made claims to this end and was again seen moving through the city, some adventurers claimed he was a murderer and others that he was committing mindless assaults. One fateful night an explosion rocked The White Mask and amongst the people departing he was witnessed by noble and common folk alike. By dawn there were rumors of the carnage, a visiting noble had been burned alive, a dozen Lord's Alliance soldiers were slain and dozens of other bodies were found below the city. The Dukes issued the decree that placed the crimes at the feet of Thedran, that he had already been arrested, but that unfortunately he had escaped and had left a soldier injured in the process. A bounty was offered and the hunt was on.
Though he never seemed to stray far from the city, his bed in the orphanage was left empty and he was seen traveling The Trade Way on many occasions. Though few adventurers attempted to claim the bounty at the time. In the north, as Triel was threatened he was again found, as the battle was joined the curious addition of Thedran was found alongside The Flaming Fist. One surviving villager observed and spoke about the black-clad soldier who risked the enemy for the sake of recovering the fallen standard of The Flaming Fist.
After the battle, he seemed to vanish from the public's view. Until the spring came along and to the astonishment of many he marched to the eastern gate of the city and offered his surrender to the soldiers posted. While many expected the promised hanging, what they found was Thedran released from custody and walking the streets of the city. A few short weeks after his release, however, he departed the city, leaving with four of the older orphan boys and heading down the southern road.
