Dear DM-Team,
By now I've had several events with several DMs on this server with (naturally) several different stances on Necromancy, the horridness of it and all that. What seems to cause some confusion, however, is whether or not the animating of corpses uses actual humanoid/sentient souls (which would, of course, be morally horrendous and much harder to argue in favour of) or ties negative energy entities into the corpse, as it seems to be the case in earlier editions.
DM opinions on this varied, and the morality and effectiveness of my character hinges somewhat on knowledge on which of these options the DM team is considering the 'right' one for the server, as having my character sometimes bind souls and sometimes not is kind of problematic to handle as a character who is supposed to know what she is doing.
Ultimately, the question is: Does Necromanctic animation (Animate Dead, Create (Greater) Undead, Army of Death) Use actual souls or negative energy beings? Or is that genuinely 'up to the DM', With my characters' knowledge of her arts changing depending on which DM is overseeing? As the latter would be rather unwieldy, to me.

Re: DM ruling on Necromancy (?)
Regardless of the method used to create undead i would still think the act of doing so is evil. (they have the descriptor "evil")
In PNP to be able to use any of the undead creation spells you need a corpse (not including the summon spells from spell compendium) Here due to mechanics you do not.
Perhaps the spells should be changed to Summon Undead which would actually be more accurate to what you are doing.

I am not arguing the evilness-factor. But my character would be more uneasy about enslaving formerly-mortal souls than negative energy entities.
In DM-events, I also at least try to only use these in situations where corpses are available or likely to be close-by.

Soft bump, as this question sincerely bugs me and saps some of the joy out of playing my little dastardly necromancer.
