Hence why I have such a bad taste in my mouth about this as there are some 'after effects' still lingering.
Sadly for the person in question, I'm now in possession of a build after about 20 RCRs in the past 2 weeks that will melt his face in approximately 20 seconds. I know this because I asked around about him a bit to see what I was up against.
So I'll be killing him on sight next time he isn't with his 'campfire posse' though like many of the Campfire Crew, he don't get out much these days...
You know, blatantly admitting some incredibly OOC reasons to be engaging in PVP against another player like this is about the poorest choice of “what to publicly post” I believe I’ve seen in a while.
On the subject of “Campfire lawbreakers”, if you are openly a practitioner of arts and activities considered evil by most people of a goodly alignment, then you need to accept that “get out of here or die” is not an OOC bullying reaction. It is, in fact, a legitimately IC response, and one that many, many people have actually bemoaned a general lacking of on the server.
I find myself agreeing; it's healthy for the server if people can roll with the RP without developing an OOC vendetta. But I've also seen would-be law enforcers chase down lawbreakers with a rather OOC mentality of "Time to make them pay!" I think it can be a bit difficult for anyone to separate IC from OOC, especially if we want to "win." And I definitely include myself in that.
Although we all know we're supposed to separate IC from OOC, it's hard to trust that the other player is doing it. That's why I'll often send OOC tells in ICly hostile situations to telegraph that I want to consider the whole situation to be a collaborative thing. I might say something like, "Hey, not a big fan of PvP, but just a heads up, I think my character's heading that way. You okay with that?" Then at the same time, I have to remind myself to be okay with the prospect of losing, because I've noticed some butthurt feelings in me if I "lose."
Like, I've played evil characters against OOC buddies of mine who were playing good characters, and vice versa. And in those situations, we just enjoy the RP as it plays out. It's like, "Ah damn you, can't believe you got me. My character is in trouble!" But for some reason, it's just so much harder to do that when I'm playing against someone I don't know OOCly. Play against a stranger, and suddenly it's more about "winning" and the collaborative RP takes more of a backseat. That's why I think OOC communication can go a long way.
I remember a friend of mine wanted to kill one of my characters, and they were going to have another player assassinate me. I didn't know the other player, and the other player was basically like, "Uh, are you SURE Arn is going to be okay with this?" So my friend OOCly triple-checked with me, I prepared myself for the very real possibility of losing, and I gave them the green light to target me. And when the hit came, it was honestly some of the best RP I've ever had on this server.

I agree. I think the way we have things now is probably the best we're going to get. Players will probably always distrust other players a bit on a server this large. But as things stand now, at least the DMs aren't directly involved in the arguments. Maybe we should table the Fist idea until we all get to know each other a bit more. (I know, I know. "What's next, you damned hippie? Should we all hold hands and sing 'Kumbaya'?"
