Disfigurement vs Shapechange/Polymorph

Unread post by BDobolina »

Simple question, appreciate feedback and conjecture.

If a wizard was disfigured, his eyes removed for example, could he use shapechange or polymorph to see in an alternate shape?

RP concept of a transmutation specializing wizard who chose the life path to overcome physical disfigurement.

Thanks!

Found a thread somewhere discussing it:

You might want some kind of DM approval of whether or not this is OK? Falls under the same category of... if a person is mute, can they speak by altering their form etc?

Ugh. Didn't want to bother them. Thanks for the link.

I guess for the purpose of this server, due to "play your character sheet", you would keep your disfigurements.

For example, you take poor eye-sight. Even if you turn into a form with great eye-sight, you still have that feat. Thus, you still have poor eye-sight, or are sickly.

I'd say, due to disfigurement being feats, you'd keep your disfigurement just as you keep any other feat.

That is specific for this server though, since on this server disfigurements are feats while on other servers, they aren't.

I've come across players with disfigurements (blind and crippled). Do you think they all had a feat for that? Is it required?

If you self-imposed a disfigurement, such as this "eyes removed" event, then I'd say you are also able to self-impose a "newfound seeing" in a Shapechange form that has "new eyes."

If a DM has overseen the disfigurement and it was "placed" upon your Character for RP, then I think you are "stuck" with that disfigurement...unless the DM themselves say it disappears with Shapechange.

Players are creating all the time One-eyed PCs and giving themselves limps and one arm and all sorts of stuff that really cannot be replicated "in-game," but is purely RP-based.

So again, if you've "given" your PC the disability, then I guess through your own RP-interpretation, you decide if that disability can be overcome (in whatever circumstance).

Real power resides with the Player!!! 8-)

This is pure speculation, just going on logic. Unless a DM says otherwise, I tend to go with this for my own characters.

1) They have a "play your character sheet" (PYCS) rule. You can only play what is on there.

2) They specifically implemented disfigurement feats, which put disfigurements on your character sheet (allowing one to stay within the PYCS rule). They even implemented an NPC to give them for free in the Nexus, so you don't need to expend feats for it.

Putting 1 and 2 together, I'd say yes. You'd be the most in the clear if you assumed that it was required. Otherwise, you run the risk of a DM saying contrary to what you are doing. It may not necessarily happen, but it is a risk none-the-less.

Basically, it amounts to cover-your-butt liability stuff.
