Yep.
Natural bond give +3 to determining level for animal companion.
Epic animal companion gives another +3 to determining level.
15+6 = 21.

Ranger draws power from nature, the animal companion is the same as for druids gained at level 4. What's wrong with that? I have invested in three feats to make my companion as strong as possible.

Re: Dragon Companion Bug
If you took the feat Dragon Companion on a Ranger/Assassin 15/8, when it's a Druid only thing, that's a bug shouldn't be able to happen. Rangers can't have the Dragon Companion feat. That's why everyone's scratching their heads.Boletus wrote:Ranger draws power from nature, the animal companion is the same as for druids gained at level 4. What's wrong with that? Re: Dragon Companion Bug
The feat Dragon companion showed up. I thought, why not, go with the flow, a dragon needs a good archer/sneaker/protector tracking potential dragon hoard thieves. I added it to my characters perpetually changing background story. Why not. It never crossed my mind that, my goodness, an epic ranger having a druid type companion! Burn me at the stake.

Re: Dragon Companion Bug
Its not about burning you at the stake. Its more about burning the feat at the stake. If it has a prereq, that does not work that needs to be addressed. Nothing to do about you.

Dragon Companion was changed, its requirements were downsized to Epic Animal Companion.Valefort wrote:Ranger with dragon companion ? What ?
You have access to this information, Valefort :O Wat. You. . .even. . .posted. . .in the thread!
I think this entire thread was struck with short-term memory loss. I suppose the people outside of QC might be confused, owing to... .the strange phrasing of patch notes (aka lack of actual documentation).
But yeah, Dragon Companion only requires Epic Animal Companion now. The discussion where we agreed to do this was in July iirc.

Re: Dragon Companion Bug
Technically in the QC discussion it was only agreed there was no issue with removing the requirement for Dragon Shape in order to take Dragon Companion. So it should still be requiring 21 levels of Druid progression. Allowing Rangers (or indeed Clerics with Animal Domain) to get dragon companion wasn't requested or discussed and should likely not be allowed without further discussion QC side. I see no issue with Rangers having a Dragon Companion, but the requirement should then be Druid 21 or Ranger 21. Animal Domain Cleric would be a bit odd to open up Dragon Companion IMO.
Ranger can't buff the Dragon as well as Druid so I don't think there is an issue with it balance wise, but still shouldn't have been implemented outside of what was agreed in QC and may very well have been an oversight.

Is there some way to get a normal animal companion back then?

Try PMing the DM team directly using the DM usergroup. They can probably help you with this as it wasn't supposed to happen and is due to a bug. Link them to this thread.

Re: Dragon Companion Bug
You'll need a DM to remove the feat from your character and then it should work, thank you for spotting the unintended bug.

I'll flag this for the DMs if it's still an issue.
