Named summoning for undead

Unread post by Necroking »

Ok, so I was thinking if maybe it would possible to extend the named summoning mechanic to undead spells, specifically spells like create undead, or the pale masters summon undead and greater undead. Perhaps create a special contract in place of a gem to perform, or a separate high level spell that acts as a sort of ritual? Or make negotiations with a named person or even Jergal himself in the same vein as normal named summoning? I'd like to hear what you guy's think of the idea.

Thanks

Well this is a bit of a long shot for me personally, but I was hoping I could replace my greater undead summon with a non-evil undead, I was thinking the ghost of one of my characters parents? Maybe tailor it to the individual character or something?

If this option does get considered, it would be worth considering extending this customisation to all summons perhaps?
Shadow summons, Planar Cohorts etc.

Well I can't speak for whoever develops these obviously, but it would make sense to me, why let only conjurers have all the fun? :D

The thing is Planar summons are meant to have names etc. you are summoning another being from another world, a being that you literally have to convince to work for you or pay for its services.

Undead all you are doing is animating a corpse to fight for you. It doesn't have its own free will, all it does is simply obey and generally speaking even if the master should perish undead are supposed to continue doing whatever it was their last order was.

except the only undead that dont have a will of their own are skeletons and zombies, all other undead are actually considered intelligent and do not instantly serve the one they are created by and actually spawn hostile and have to be either convinced or forcibly controlled, which is why there is a control undead spell that is suppose to be used after create and greater create undead

...but limitations of a game engine simply gives you control to start with, and hostile spawning of hostile entities didnt work out well (hellfire original summons)

They dont have free will. They are going on instincts which cause them to feed on the living. They are not capable of choosing not to. with the exception of a few higher up intelligent undead such as vampires.

Think you are all missing the point.

I'm guessing the point is "allowing names for RP tools".
After all.. summons are tools to help deliver your RP story. Your story. Not NWN2's story.
If your character has a special name for a repetitive summon/conjuration or some such... why can't them call it that name.
Even if it was an intelligent summon/conjured being. It would have a name. Why can't you choose the name as part of your story.

Irrespective of the fact if its even possible at all in the engine.

Might help slow down occurences of meta'ing summons too. Forcing people to look deeper and RP more.

if people were using them as rp *thumbs up* but they aren't they are using it for resell, collectors, and pve/pvp. Mostly the collectors buy/sell (selling dusty tome, selling tn - and " oh I have like seven tn being that I never actually use for anything then a collecter item ) so people arn't even treating tn's as rp and who they are binding to them besides ya I have a dimond and gosh know how much gold bind to me and never see the daylight again. have yet to legitly see rp using a summon / tn personly from anyone. :?

I remember on my pale master I roleplayed my elite vampire as a sentient being with her own name, thoughts etc and often spoke from her perspective, it was a very important part of my character (I even had a DM event where she was controlled by a DM, revealing part of her past), and I remember how bad did I want this named summon feature back then! Although I don't play palemaster anymore, I'm really voting for that feature.

I couldn't even cast animate undead while farming the graveyard without the whole surface flipping out on me. I don't think casting these spells is legal or should be encouraged even more.. cool things like this are traps for new players to get their character jailed or hanged.
