How does ONE WEAPON feat work exactly?

Unread post by blacksoft »

Per Wiki:
If you are fighting with only one weapon, and carrying nothing in your off hand, the One Weapon feat enables a combat style in which you narrow your profile and situationally attempt to dodge, deflect, and dish out attacks. While the style is active you gain +1 dodge AC.

If you roll a 6 or higher during combat (on a d10, unrelated to attacks, secretly rolled) you perform a tumble skill check for one of several maneuvers.

You may perform an acrobatic dodge (+4 tumble, +1 dodge AC), a weaving assault (+d4 AB), insightful footwork (+2 dodge AC one round), a deflecting sweep (1 Deflection AC, +1 for every ten parry ranks), or an off-hand swap (+4 bluff), all these bonuses last 1 round.
Is the secret roll made each round when you are in combat? Does it roll when you are under any spell influence such as daze, fear, paralyze, held...etc

Tumble skill check - What DC are you trying to beat using your tumble skill?

Once you beat the tumble skill check, do these actions have equal opportunity of firing each round or do they take turns?

Acrobatic dodge - Does the +1 dodge AC stack with everything?

Insightful footwork - does the +2 dodge AC stack with everything?

Deflecting Sweep - Is only natural (max 33) tumble skill used or does it progress further based on dex, feats, items? If so, is there a cap? If capped by natural skill of 30 and cap therefore is +4 deflection bonus to AC, is this in addition to deflection items or is it the higher between the two?

Question was asked previously in tips & tricks. Valefort explains full mechanics. (Dodge AC always stacks to cap of 20)

There are three steps.

First a roll to see if there is a tumble check or not, 1/2 chance of happening.

Secondly the Tumble check (12 + your attacker's BAB (or your own BAB if the attacker can't be found) vs your tumble score +d20)

Thirdly if it succeeds then one of the following maneuvers is selected at random :
  • acrobatic dodge (+4 tumble, +1 dodge AC)
  • weaving assault (+d4 AB)
  • insightful footwork (+2 dodge AC)
  • deflecting sweep (1 Deflection AC, +1 for every ten parry ranks)
  • off-hand swap (+4 bluff)
They all have equal chances of happening and their benefits last for 1 round.

The tumble check is likely a bit too easy ... It was tweaked because it wasn't working entirely reliably and because it was too powerful.

I can tell you from empirical experience that if you use One Weapon with a build having max 15 Tumble skill at Level 30, plus/minus modifiers from DEX and items, you will see a progressively less popping One Weapon feat, as you level up your Toon.

But otherwise, it is a +1 to AC and when it does work it is a great bonus. What I do wish is that it lasted 2 rounds. 8-)

How does this work with say, a medium sized weapon like a longsword that when you don't have anything in your off hand is a "two handed" weapon?

Or is it only for strict 1 handed weapons like short swords, rapiers, and other such things that don't double-hand?

Gameplay Notes
This feat works now with Two-Handed Weapons (e.g. Greatsword,Greataxe...). The only restriction is you cant carry something in your offhand (no second weapon, no shield with monkey grip). Your weapon doesnt have to be a light weapon to enable this feat. Does not work with Unarmed Attacks.
