Background:

Averill was born in Baldur's Gate during 1334 DR. When he was 13 his father, a low ranking member of the Flaming Fist, died at the Battle of Gullykin during the Amn-Gate War of 1347 DR. This wrecked the family on emotional and financial levels. His mother was literate and secured work relating to manifests and logistics at the harbor. Averill learned some harsh lessons while living in this part of the city but there was fun to be had as well.

When he began to manifest Sorcerous powers he didn't exactly have access to a proper education but he did manage to learn scraps from a variety of adventurers passing through Baldur's Gate. Before long he felt he had things under control and began testing his powers against the bandits that cause problems in the immediate area. Averill decided he liked it and the payoff quite a lot and has taken to adventuring so that he can be posh instead of dirty and destitute. He's also found he enjoys continuing to expand his knowledge of the Arcane and other things as well.
