I don't recall how to do that off the top of my head, but I know it can be done.

Easiest thus far:
Stand immediately next to the troublesome chest/bag. Click (as if looting) and IMMEDIATELY backup with the keyboard. I usually get it on the first or second try.

Also the OP is "the man!" for posting this.
