Re: OOC Greed
If your trying to be altruistic why do you care if someone turns a buck off it? Maybe target your giving better if certain people benefiting bothers you.

Nobody can control who buys posted items on the consignment shop.Young Werther wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2019 4:35 pm If your trying to be altruistic why do you care if someone turns a buck off it? Maybe target your giving better if certain people benefiting bothers you.
Anyway, to those who claim this may not necessarily be OOC greed, I say this: there are players who invest skill points, feats, roleplay and time in playing merchants who actually get things at cheaper prices and resell them at a profit. That is indeed merchant roleplay and it's great. Buying something from the consignment shop and not even being smart enough to at least *try* and disguise it somehow before reposting for more than double the value is not merchant roleplay of any sort. It's just a few clicks of the mouse to satisfy pure OOC greed and take advantage of both the person trying to help others by selling nice things at affordable prices and the would-be buyer who might get it at such an affordable price.
That's some immense wealth of merchant roleplay created right there, isn't it?
Edited to fix a typo.

You don't have to use the consignment shop if it bothers you.

Consider it a free lesson in both economics and human nature Hell, better than free!
You got some gold out of it.
Now that's a win/win .

Re: OOC Greed
The only case of greed that bothered me was when once my character left a pretty good axe in the donations box at the FAI , only to find it sold to the npc merchant less than half an hour later .
I mean it could have fetched a decent price on the consignment if someone was in need of coins , I'd take it better if it ended up there , than someone selling it to an npc for 1200 coins .

Re: OOC Greed
Gotta say I find it strange to take that moral high ground on this shop.
To me it's super ooc in general and is about getting more gold out of items you just can't sell anywhere for a good price unless you really put a lot of effort into it.
I've bought a shield that someone offered very cheap because it was better than the one I wanted to sell and he sold it cheaper than I wanted to sell my shield... So I bought it and sold both for a very nice gain.
Did it feel bad... No not at all.
That being said I really don't like to use this shop, I wanted to find a merchant that would be willing to sell my stuff as my character is no merchant but sadly noone was interested ;(

Re: OOC Greed
I remember one of the efforts towards helping out new players was the Pathfinder Hall vault, where members got (free?) gear.
Then there's been a couple times where street merchant players give my lowbies the hookup on decent gear because it's good customer relations, sometimes even freebies. Just yesterday I had a short RP session with someone who gave my mage some bonus spell gear which was tight because I already gave all mine away to a friend a year or so ago.
I've seen someone sell boots +4 for 50k outside the FAI and it was snapped up really quick.
But all in all I like people being greedy in my RP setting.

I think it's not good for the server many attitudes taken, peraphs a bit more altruism would help, I know how capitalism works and how ruthless and bloodthirsty econnomists are, but Faerun is not capitalist and being a rich PC with lots of items and gold is like...You know they say rich people is never happy?
Imagine, if those guys, with their REAL money, are so miserable, think of pixelated gold and items.
It's been scientifically proven that giving stuff away releases more serotonin (so it makes you happier)

Re: OOC Greed
Santa Claus is a red wizard who likes to fly around Nightal 24th and use shrink person to fit into your chimney to deliver slave built magic trinkets to family hearths across Faerun. He does it for the milk and cookies the peasantry have on hand being addicted to the dopamine hit from fats and sugar. It releases all the stress of being a red wizard where his rivals want to kill him for owning too much wealth.

Let's skip the name calling and judging of RP. This server is made up of lots of styles of RP, and I dont see that changing anytime soon.

Re: OOC Greed
I do understand the sentiment of the OP, but I also think the consignment shop is not designed for charity - it's designed to help everyone - new players and veterans - to make a profit on the items they're selling. Ideally, the most profit they can in a supply/demand economy.
It's probably a better idea to find an alternate means to be a good samaritan, instead of hoping people who frequent the consignment shop to make a profit not to pounce on what they likely see as a percieved "steal." Maybe a forum post with a list of items you're willing to donate to lowbies. Or adding them to your examine description and hanging around the hub areas?
You might try renaming the items to note clearly they are intended for lowbies before putting them up on auction, but again, there's no guarantee your item will make it to your intended audience on a consignment shop designed for everyone to access.

Re: OOC Greed
Please be aware that reselling items at higher price is allowed and completely acceptable.
In real life it is acceptable to buy an item at garage sale, discover that it is a collectors item or an artifact, and then resell it at half a million USD. Without giving a cent to the original unsuspecting owner. Same applies here.
Additionally, necessary gear is available through npc stores. So, you can buy it from npcs and avoid trading with players. Except the npcs charge much more than players do.
In the end if you put an item at a low price for sale that was your choice, because you needed money fast. If somebody resells it at higher mark, that was their choice, because they believe that the item is more valuable and are willing to play the "long game" waiting for someone who want to spend more. The long game may or may not bear fruit.
Those interested in merchant roleplay can check this thread written by Karond. While information may be a bit outdated by now, general principles still apply:

Be aware that successfully playing a merchant is not easy and can be incredibly time consuming.
Have fun.

Re: OOC Greed
Noob here, how does consignment shop work in detail?
What are the time limits on items, how do I get paid, are there fees to the Mudds for the service?
I'd like to learn more so that I may be able to play this market for gold without having to farm myself.
