Background:
The only daughter of a wealthy Waterdhavian merchant, Caili has always had it fairly easy in life. Well-cared for, well-educated, and well-protected, she seldom wanted for much.
Except one thing.
Caili has always wondered what the world was like, beyond the rigid social rules and the comfort of her family's mercantile circles. Spending most of her childhood at home or accompanying her father on his visits to his colleagues, she'd had very little experience with the outside world, and typically spent her free time tinkering with various small mechanisms or immersing herself in tomes of arcane lore. She would often make a game of sneaking around the house unseen, or performing 'magic tricks', building her coordination - and, though she didn't realize it at the time, a knack for burglary and pickpocketing.
These skills would serve her well - far better than her minor magical knowledge - when the time came for her to head out into the world. One night in early Nightal, 1355, Caili decided she had had enough of being cooped up at home. Craving adventure, the young woman snuck out of the house with a mildly enchanted dagger, a few dozen gold pieces, and four layers of clothing on her. (She has an ongoing problem with the cold.)
Purchasing a few more items, including an amulet to help with her sneaking and a few magical scrolls to study, Caili quickly left Waterdeep before her parents realized she was gone, and traveled south in the direction of Baldur's Gate, ignorant of the trials she would face...
Goals: Become a hero, in so many words. Prove to herself and the world that she's good for more than attending balls and generally being a pretty face, and make a name for herself. (Though given her minimal level of physical fitness and her 12 CHA, the prettiness of her face may be open to debate.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
- Caili's family still does not know where she is, only why she left; they may be looking for her. If they track her down, they may try to take her back to Waterdeep, or they might opt to support her foray into adventuring by providing her with funds or equipment. (This is predominantly an excuse to mule stuff over from my other PCs.)
- Being reasonably successful merchants, the Wenders could conceivably have made a few enemies by the time Caili left Waterdeep. They may be making them even now. Although she is somewhat out of the way, one could plausibly come after her, either to use her as leverage against her parents or to hurt them by killing her.
- She really doesn't do well in the winter cold. She's never fully understood how cold winters are - either in Waterdeep or in Baldur's Gate - and though she's tried to dress a little better for it and find spells to ward against the cold, she's still a frightfully frail individual, ill-suited to the adventuring life.
