Tips for new player

Unread post by Alex333 »

Hello everyone,

First I am pleased to meet you all, I look forward to play and have fun together !

I am a complete new player to NWN2 and it is THIS module which give me the urge to buy the game... but I wanted to now if this psw is newbie-friendly as well as any tips you may have under your belt ! :)

I have played and enjoyed BG1 and now a fair bit about the Forgotten Realms by devouring the wiki ! So lore-wise its should be okay-ish... but the gameplay aspect kind of « scare » me ahah

P.S. I plan to play a would-be archmage, any magic tips will be welcomed too

Thanks in advance !

First and foremost, welcome.

We hope you'll enjoy your time here, though I must state that bein' a mage out of the gate might not be the most fun thing to do. Yes, they're quite powerful in the long run, but gettin' to that point (or even bein' self sufficient at the first) might be difficult.

My advice?

Learn Appraise. It'll help you get a good price for items that you sell/buy. Consider teamin' up with one of the various factions especially if you want to be any kind of a merchant. This is also true for any grooup that would like to have a magi on their roster. Just ask around. Most folks are more then happy to help where they can.

Second bit of advice, take it slow. Ask questions. Learn anything and everything you can before you make major decisions about your character. While you can rebuild them, it get progressively less effective to delevel/relevel as the XP penalty will not give you the full levels back. Try to plan your build out before you get too deep. That way, you don't shoot yourself in the foot much later, and realize that what you wanted to do, might not be possible. Trust me, personal experience there!

You know, only on the Coast would that have needed to be said. :?

Heya Alex,

welcome to the server. The advice to take it slow is a good one, the world is vast and especially for a low level wizard going to the wrong spot can be very deadly.

I would advice to ask for directions once in game and to make your wizard less of a squishy target, get yourself some bonus HP gear, for starters there is a bag pack of the hearty that will grant you like 10 hp I think, so probably more than double your hp.
Maybe it was just 5 hp not sure right now but generally that kind of equipment is rather cheap and helps a bunch.

Other than that meet other people to team up and have fun with.

There are a lot of nice people in this community so I am sure you'll enjoy yourself but also your new to be found peers :).

Have fun :)

Thank you all for your welcome and you advice !

In order to build my character sheet I was wondering which guild is active on the surface ? As it should be the best way to contact new player as well as asking question, RPing, learning, etc..
The school of Necromancy appeal to the kind of character I want to design, but I don’t want to head down there as of yet...

Posting something in the guild Channel seems inappropriate ?

Hehe, well generally there is more activity on the surface I guess.

Should you be interested in coming down let me know.

I know Artorias is building a guild around research which would possibly fit an Archmage.

I honestly don't know any other faction that would be specifically for wizards.

I hope I am not stepping on someone's feet here XD.

Cheers K'yon

consumables are your friend.... grab potions of barkskin, mage armor, shield and heroism and even a level 1 mage can solo bash most of the early content. with the initial 1,000 gold, spending ~500 on these potions and drinking them right before clearing a dungeon will net you more than enough loot to get more potions. So instead of stocking up on a ton of healing, grab the bonus HP item and the above four potions. You will quite easily reach level 2 and end up with a couple thousand gold.

Far fewer players would lament how difficult the server content is if they would simply consider ways in which to enhance their characters survivability. ;)

enjoy.

Don't make him too weak (STR) otherwise you can't carry any loot ;)

A few tips and advice I could give.

For starters, you can always make a human/dwarven fighter, level them to 10 and then remake (RCR) it in the Nexus. I believe you get full XP refunded up to level 10, so you can make a new character and use the XP from your fighter to make a level 10 mage. This will help bypass the early struggles of being a mage.. If you don't mind a.. rather steep learning curve/challenge, then I suppose that is rather useless advice. :p

Second, if you like, check out the Phoenix Company. I've never joined them myself but they are quite welcoming to new players and friendly. Look for Terri, she's been around for a long time and her guild stays quite active from my experience. They also tend to find themselves mixed up with most DM events, which is always a special treat.

Just to keep the RP for your character consistent, keep in mind the time line we are in. It is currently the year 1356 which I believe still puts us in the time line of 1st Edition, pre Time of Troubles.. I've heard more than a few players recount their fond memories of meeting Drizzt Do'udren over the years. ;)

Put at least 1 point in open lock.. Seems like more than 80% of chest on this server can be picked with a DC lower than 30 and while you don't need to pick most chest to open them, it is free xp every time you do. Once you reach higher levels, you might even find you get as much of your XP from picking locks as you do monsters due to the amount of time you will likely spend in lower level dungeons treasure hunting.

On that note, never underestimate the treasures you can find in lower level dungeons.

There are quite a few quest scattered about that can help you through levels. I believe you can nearly reach level 2 just by doing the fetch quest in Baldur's Gate. Social stills such as Bluff, Diplomacy, and Intimidate can help you reap better rewards on some quest.. And choosing to forgo the gold reward for completing a job can sometimes earn you more experience. The quest refresh a week after completion IIRC.

If the game seems stuttery, which is almost guaranteed to be an issue, you can fix it by either rebooting your PC, using the client extension, or a fix I post a few days ago. Links below for both.

Never be scared to send people a tell in game to ask a question if you need to. I've never met anyone who wasn't happy to help. Of course.. asking someone to come rez you would be.. a bit frowned on by most.. But that goes without saying.. Which I just said anyway...

And lastly.. Just have fun! Don't sweat how good or bad your RP ability is. You'll meet people who seem to RP in a class of their own, and you'll meet people who make you wonder if they are making any attempt at all. Doesn't matter. Just find some folk you have fun playing with and enjoy. You RP ability will improve over time and stressing out about how you sound to others is a quick way to ruin your fun and actually makes you a worse RPer as you spend 10 minutes trying to think on how to respond! That is my very personal experience!
