Gloves and elemental damage not stacking

Unread post by MaskedOne1 »

hey,

made a sacred fist who is also a spirit shaman, and i am having a problem with the spells flame and frost weapons (the spells that add +1d8 fire and cold damage respectively). It is possible to target a weapon or target another player holding a weapon, and cast both spells on the same person for a total of +2d8 elemental damage. i tested this with another player, today.

i know for a fact that this also has been possible on monks wearing gloves/gauntlets before, cause i have another monk, and a druid did do that to boost my damage several times.

now i can cast one of the spells directly on myself to add +1d8 elemental damage, but if i cast the other as well directly on myself, the latter simply replaces the former, which is not what should happen, i obviously selected both spells to be able to do more dam, as my build lacks damage compared to full monk. the fact that it does not work anymore is quite the surprise and a huge bummer.

i also tried casting each spell directly onto the gloves, in that instance i get "this spell can only be cast directly on a weapon", which surprised me, i guess you guys must have changed gloves/gauntlets as no longer counting as a weapon? the gloves i wear are +4 enchantment gauntlets and are obviously weapons.

seems strange/unfair that a weapon wielder should be able to take advantage of this, and i as a pugilist cannot?
also, i cannot compensate by just using a weapon instead, sacred fists take a wow not to use weapons.

could you guys fix this? much obliged

cheers

Yeah that stacking works only on other players not yourself.

Is the stacking a bug or a feature ?
From my understanding it always was an either/or

Would be nice if it got fixed - one way or the other .........

there are 2 things about elemental damage from druid/spirit shaman we have to address here.

Case A (circa 2017)
1. originally 1d8 flame/cold multiplies on crit (few years back, someone cast them on my PC and it multiplies with the weapon crit multiplier)
2. originally, you cannot have two of the same elemental damage cast by druid stacking (tested them last few years too). its either you have fire or cold

changes that i noticed
Case B(circa 2018)
1. 1d8 flame/cold was changed to not multiply with weapon crit anymore if casted on others, but it multiplies if cast on self, meaning you are a druid or spirit shaman. (need to check)
2. still cant have two damage type. either or

another change after
Case C(circa 2019-2020)
1. cast on self and cast on others cant multiple anymore even with x2 or x3 weapon crit (no more crit fire 2d8 or 3d8)
2. you can have two of the same elemental damage when a druid/spirit shaman cast them to others. but not to self like what OP was explaining

so now i am confused which one is working, and what was the final decision for these spells and how do they work.

another confusion is the
-Ranger spell adding fire damage either they follow case A, B, or C
-wizard spell adding fire damage either they follow case A, B, or C
-paladin spell 1d4 sonic damage multiplies by crit(tested)
-bard spell 1d4 sonic that can be given to others
-stormlord electricity damage
-darkfire disciple damage

Yeah, it's a bloody mess with all that elemental damage from spells/feats on weapons.

Would be nice if there was a definite rule what will/will not multiply on a crit.
Also some spells/feat work on both weapons (dualwielding) - some do not.

But that has nothing to do with this post.

as an addendum,

the spell description says that you cant have both fire and cold on the same weapon, im not sure if this is intentional or not, but it does state that. since you can in fact have both on the same char, if cast by another, i figured this was simply was an error.

personally i dont see why you should not have these damage types stack, but i also see the usual argument of "balance" coming down the road, which never has and in D&D 3.5 never will make any sense to me, the classes are not equal, period.

izzul brings up a valid point as well about all the other types of elemental dam, which ones stack (and why), which ones miltiply on crit (and why), it would be nice to get some insight as to the thought process of the Devs on this one.

thanks

from the wiki
Frost Weapon
This spell magically cools a melee weapon, granting 1d8 points of cold damage. You can target a specific weapon or a creature with this spell. This spell does not stack with Flame Weapon, or vice-versa.

heya,

addendum two

the character who casts the spells of frost or flame weapon cannot be affected by both at the same time, this is limited to, based on what we have tested: druids and spirit shamans. so anyone using a wand of each could use it on themselves. just additional information.
