Background:

Born to Daelric and Cylla Aporos, refugees who fled from their ancestral Luthcheq after the 1324 persecution of mages, into the poverty stricken River district of Athkatla. Zaren, his two older brothers, younger brother, and the younger twin sisters shared a small two bedroom shack. Daelric Aporos, once an adventurer in his native land, found himself working for poverty wages at a butcher shop; Cylla, was forced to find work as a servant for a wealthy family in the Gem district. As a result of his parent's working situation Zaren was raised by his two older brother's Cyllic and Xandos. Cyllic was twelve years Zaren's senior, he was born just a month before the Aporos clan fled from Luthcheq. Xandos was merely four years older than Zaren. Upon reaching the age of eighteen Cyllic seized an opportunity to escape the slums of Athkatla and joined the Amnian military and was shipped to Eshpurta. For the next few years Zaren grew to idolize his brother and his service. Awaiting, every letter Cyllic would send.

During his youth Zaren was known to be a mischievous child with a silver tongue. He learned how to gracefully weave himself out of any situation he put himself into. In 1345 at age nine Zaren lost his twin sisters and mother to the Coast plague, while he himself also contracted the illness. However, he narrowly survived. Zaren's luck did not stand to change, in 1347 his father was conscripted into the Amnian army and sent to fortify Nashkel. Mere months later Zaren received his last letter from Cyllic informing him that their father was slain in a skirmish south of Beregost. A few days later the three Aporos brothers received a letter that Cyllic died a hero's death at the hands of the Gate's mercenaries during the legendary battle of Beregost. Along with these letters the fifteen year old Xandos, eleven year old Zaren, and eight year old Phalos were given a modest pension for the loss of their family. The brothers took the opportunity to purchase a small cottage in Crimmor where Xandos quickly found work as a wagonmaker and Zaren began working as a keg cleaner at an inn frequented by caravaneers and mercenaries. For the next eight years Zaren worked in varying roles at the inn, hearing tales of faraway lands. Of the wealth to be gained by those who had the courage to seek it. Zaren realized he was done working for a living, he was ready to make something of himself. Despite Xandos' disapproval and Phalos beginning to associate with a rough crowd, Zaren bid farewell to his brothers. Promising to send his soon new-found wealth home, Zaren took up a caravan driver's offer to join his escort to Baldur's Gate. Thus starting his journey in the city-state that took his family away from him.
