Halberd Wielding Fighter

Unread post by qwertyh88 »

Looking to create a more flavor Halberd built utilizing the unique (slashing & piercing type damage of halberds, assuming it works)

Using Dervish & Duelist - to Increase damage & HIPS for survival

http://nwn2db.com/build/?322458

Any other ways to make this build better?

Thanks.

I don't think Duelist would work with Halberd.

I would skip Duelist for Fighter:

12 Fighter/10 Dervish + splash of Rogue, Whirling Dervish or whatever else for evasion access.

its probably not so much that the damage type doesnt work but duelist does need to be single handed and halberd is two handed

but with the change for 19 dex on SD and using a halberd you would also be splitting stats a bit much since dex will do nothing for you on damage or AB

WM also works wonders with the halberd, that 17-20 x4 is really nice on mine

Duelist will not work with Halberd, though it will with Spear.

Halberd's kind of screwy, in that the slashing property disqualifies it from Duelist synergy, and then when you fight mobs with DR overcome by slashing or piercing, the engine will penalize you and reference the unfavorable damage type.

All of the above said, I played a F12/WoD10/BG4/TK4 to about level ~28 or 29 (I forget) and it was fine. Obviously Halberd is not an ideal choice (no two handed weapon is, unless specific build that gets plenty of AC without a shield). Still with a handy buff bot overlord (red wizard) or the right consumables he could pretty much survive most places solo thanks to very good saves and a certain tower shield that gives monkey grip. In a group was where he really shined. My buddy had a M@A Thayan Knight that could grab and hold aggro allowing me to focus on EDM Power Attacking for massive damage.

If not going the Thayan route I would still stick with the above build and just go for an evasion dip with the last class or, if not powerbuilding maybe bodyguard. Of course if you want dervish that certainly works, but I'd say F12/D10/AK4 (or WoD)/X4 (rogue for evasion, UMD and uncanny dodge or whatever else you want) is probably where you want to be. If you are going for a neutral PC Divine Champion would be a good option instead of AK/WoD. Basically I just recommend something to help your poor will saves as much as you can.

You can also achieve all around goodness with a halberd-wielding Fighter (6), Dervish (10), Whirling Dervish (10), Warrior of Darkness (4).

Loses 5 AB (Greater/Epic Weapon Focus, Melee Mastery) and 6 damage (Greater/Epic Weapon Focus, Melee Mastery). However, gains a bit of sneak dice (though no way to apply sneak damage unless feint, but probably won't have high enough bluff for it to ever work) some RP and mechanical value from skill focus (heal!) and a couple uses of an "Oh @#$" button (ethereal jaunt 2/day, aka minor teleportation). To Steve's point though, defense often trumps offense...

Thanks for the quick feedbacks,
Halberd appears to be such a poor weapon now :(.

I went with my initial build utilizing dervish/bard/duelist because they had more skill points than using a fighter with +2. I thought I finally had enough skill points to my liking to be able to have hide/ms along with other nice skills to allow grabbing for HIPs on shadow dancer. (the extra points spent on Dex seemed to be a small price for HIPS & opening up my bracer for a non-dex item -- if referencing my initial build -- my character had 28 strength at end including +3 str item)

But it seems Precise Strike does not work on Halberd -- it's now a moot point of the build.

Regarding some of the similar build suggested, I already have one planned as a 12F/10Dervish/5DC/3Cleric
with cleric grabbing evasion & slippery mind -- Right now just waiting to have the necessary weapons to come about before building it out.

Steve's build is sort of out of the box build. +1

halberd is a good weapon but it is one of those glass cannon weapons, works well in groups when someone can buff your AC or even more damage

mine is 12 F / 7 WM / 6 DC / 5 FB, has +50 AB, 420hp, 33 AC with +4 bracers and full plate (has addy 3/- with 10% fire immunity), decent saves for a fighter bc of DC; 28/19/18, and damage 17-20 x4, 1d12 + 24 +3d6 on crits (overwhelming crit) normally; 44 AB, 1d12 + 44 +3d6 on crits with IPA

so in IPA he crits can get over 200 and he will often crit in pairs so while low AC will get you hurt, most things dont live long enough to kill you before you can heal up depending on where you bother to go

I understand your point Blackman. In my mind, I would opt for either Scythe or Warmace if I were to chase after BIG Crits.

As I mentioned above, I thought Halberd would've been a nice weapon for HIPS & Good Damage if it worked with Duelist. But anyways -- It's a moot point now.

There are another few build besides the (invalid) Halberd built that I was comparing with:

12Bard/10Dervish/5TC/3SD - Going with longsword
or a
10 Duelist/8Bard/8Fighter/4 SD -Going Spear

Neither worked imo as well as the halberd built if it actually worked....

yea i hear you, his original build before the 19 dex change was with hips bc WM quals for SD but 12 F and 7 WM is basically his base build, the original was 12 F / 7 WM / 3 SD / 8 BG, damage was about half of what it is now but he had higher survival from hips

dropping from stealth critting hard was always fun... then hipsing wizards happened :(
