Lathander's Morningstar - Journal of a Paladin

Unread post by realayer »

The followings are the entries of the journal I keep recording my adventures in Baldur's Gate and the Sword Coast South. For an account prior to my arrival in the Gate, please refer to my biography.

11th of Kythorn, 1352

Two ten days has passed since I arrived in the Gate, there was nothing unusual in the Gate and its environs. I had been helping the folks here for some of the errands and doing some travel around. Nothing unusual, until today.

Halfway across the Boareskyr Bridge, I met a she-half-elf. She was there watching me when I was taking down some of the highwaymen on the bridge. After that we introduced ourselves and conversed a little bit. Interesting, she referred to herself as a hunter of the waterfalls. Not understanding what this "of the waterfalls" means, I asked for a clarification. She explained, however, unsatisfactorily. I further asked if she could demonstrate the hunt of waterfalls, she refused as she had to depart. But from our conversation, she seems to be disappointed to the politics at the ducal court of Baldur's Gate, although she never attends a ducal meeting. It seems she has a way to learn what's happening at the court. Before she left, she suggested me to go to the ducal meeting. This is an interesting lead. I will go to the ducal meeting to see what happens if a have a chance.

12th of Kythorn, 1352

As usual, I patrolled around the northern regions of Soubar and Boareskyr Bridge. This night I suffered humiliation. Before I reached the bridge, I encountered a she-hin. I looked at her and she seemed to be injured, so I intended to offer my healing. Yet, she revealed to be a bandit and demanded all the gold I have. As a paladin, of course I could not let this banditry happens. Not until death. I refused to hand her my gold without a fight. The bandit, however, overwhelmed me with ease, and I was knocked unconscious quickly, even before I could draw my weapon. This day, I was ashamed for I fell before the bandit and failed to uphold my duty as a paladin to eradicate evil upon this land.

I woke up shortly after recovering from injuries. Luckily, I lost nothing besides my dignity. I went back to the village of Soubar to warn people about this dangerous she-hin.

13th of Kythorn, 1352

Another day of adventure. Today I venture deeper into the northern regions - to the High Moor. Creatures there pose greater danger than the ones I encountered in the other places north of the Gate. Normal hobgoblins are easy to handle, but the real menace is their shaman. They are always a headache to me. Their elemental magic strikes pain into my heart, and the vile animals they summon are formidable, even stronger than their warriors.

While I was surrounded by a group of hobgoblins, a she-hin appeared. Another she-hin! But this time the scout came to my aid. She was chased out of the dark forest by the orcs there, and I struggled with the hobgoblins here. Since we both need a hand in our adventure in the High Moor, we decided to join forces. Together the hobgoblins were no match for us and we swept their encampment with ease. The southern portion of the Moor seemed pacified at last, then we moved north.

As soon as we reached the swamp north of the Moor, we were bathed in the glory of the rising sun. I could feel Lathander's power flowing inside me. The walking tree there posed no threat because of my Lord's presence. Yet we stopped advancing north. According to the hin, there are vampires further into the swamp. Vampires! The sworn enemy of the Morninglord! I am eager to face them, but at the hin's request we turned to venture the dark forest. I swear I will return to eradicate this abomination.

The forest orcs are sneaky. They ambushed us several time while we strode the forest trail. Still they are not serious threat to us. We had to keep our guard on along the trail. Eventually our guard wore down because of the constant menace. We decided to retire from adventure. The hin stayed in the forest to scout if there were any enemy pursuing us, while I returned to Soubar to rest.

14th of Kythorn, 1352

It seems my plate armour, which had accompanied me for the last seven years during my pilgrimage, no longer serves me well in my travel as it cannot provide adequate protection against the increasing challenging creatures I am facing in this part of the Realm. In particular, the she-hin bandit - the pain she caused still lingers in my body. Not to mention the trauma she caused in my heart. It is a brutal lesson for me, but I have to overcome it. In order to better fulfill my duty as a paladin, first step I need better gear. It is sad to say but it seems I have to replace my old armour, a memento that witnesses my adventures from the Sword Coast to the Sea of Fallen Stars.

So I started to journey back to Baldur's Gate in search of a masterpiece. Being a metropolis, I have a better chance to find a better quality of armour than in Soubar. First, I arrived at the East Gate. There I have no luck finding a suitable armour. The arms merchant Maltz only offers ordinary stuffs, nothing of exceptional quality. But I was not disheartened as I believe by my Lord's will I will eventually obtain an armour suitable for me. I prayed and moved on.

Then I went to the Habour District as I heard a master-smith runs a smithy there. Mayhaps he might help what I wanted or I could order a suit armour to be forged for me. The smithy is hard to find as it is hidden behind lineups of warehouses in the district. But once I was in midst of the storages, I heard the sound of hammering metal. Following the trail of the sound, I arrived to an alley where the smith's shoppe is located. Inside the workshop, I found an old smith, who seems to have seen fifty winters already and his items on sale. There were a few weapons and a suit of fullplate armour on display. The armour attracted my attention as I could sense the magical property radiant from within it - it was made for a paladin long time ago and it was now under the care of the old smith. I know I found it. An armour worthy to be worn by another paladin. Immediately I asked the smith for the price of it and we agreed it to be twenty bags of gold. What a modest price for such a fine crafted armour with a long history of an admirable paladin. The good smith then took my measurement only with his bare eyes and adjusted it to fit my stature. The smith is indeed a master amongst his peers! He asked me to return later to pick up the armour after the adjustment.

Later that day, I returned for my armour. I admire his craftsmanship and so we conversed a little bit. Upon knowing I am a Lanthanderite, the good smith offered the armour for free because his deceased wife was a fellow Lathanderite. This is such a gift that I cannot accept freely! For this is an armour of significant for a paladin! The good smith, however, insisted. I then suggested him to donate the money to the Church of Lathander in Beregost as they will make use of it better than I do. And I, as a paladin, vowed to never take monetary benefits. The smith accepted my suggestion and told me that he once traveled there to mourn for the death of a paladin. It saddened me to learn of the news of a fellow paladin's death. Although I had never met him in person, I bet his was a reputable knight as his death moved an old man to travel far to attend his funeral. After a short exchange of word and my condolence for the smith's deceased wife, I left the smith to finish his day of work.

17th of Kythorn, 1352

I returned to Soubar after acquiring my new set of armour to test it functionality against my enemy. As usual, I patrolled the region near Soubar and Boareskyr Bridge. The armour works well against hostile mages as it absorbs magical damage from their spells. It makes me confident in facing mages, who used to be the source of my headache in the past.

After my ususal patrol, I returned to the village of Soubar and met a she-hin named Hoppy. She is such a pleasant little creature with such a positive personality. We conversed for awhile before I went to retire for my day. After she learnt that I am a Lathanderite, she offered me a sunflower she picked up from Beregost as a gift, knowing that we, the Lathanderites, treasure everything that embrace the glory of the Morninglord. She is such a lovely creature! She even offered to lead me to Beregost, knowing that I am new to this part of the Realm. Unfortunately, it is such a long trip that needs to be well prepared, and I was too tired for it after today's patrol. But surely if my Lord wills it, we will meet each other again and do the travel together.

Now reflect on recent events, from the good old smith to the new gnome friend I made, all lead me to the same place - Beregost. Perhaps these are all my Lord's signs to urge me to continue my pilgrimage south. I should not fail my Lord and should make haste to contact the church there as soon as possible.

Finally! After a month of traveling, I set my foot on Beregost. The trip down the Coast Way was quite uneventful, besides those petty bandits and highwaymen as well as goblins along the way. By the light of Lathander, these dark and evil manifestations were no match for me. And I also ran some errands for people in need of help en route. I hope my deeds on the road will make the coast a safer place.

Upon the arrival of Beregost, I immediately rush to the only impressive building in town. According to the townfolks, it was the temple of the Lathanderite church, the Song of the Morning. After speaking with the two templars on duty outside the temple, I stepped inside but found no one. Therefore, I left a message on the alter and wish my fellow brothers and sisters will see it when they are there. By the mean time, I will be staying in Feldepost's Inn.

I hope there will be some good news soon.

22nd of Flamerule, 1352

On my way to Beregost, I realized that there was a folk not far north of the town leading to the famous Candlekeep. The keep is the bastion of knowledge and for a bookworm like me it is a place I must visit once in a lifetime. Back then I made haste to contact the Beregost church so I did not diverge my trip to the keep. Now I haven't heard back from the church, so I decided to pay the church a visit. I left a message with the owner of the inn Feldepost to any Lathanderite seeking me in the inn that I am on a trip to Candlekeep and will be back in several days.

After two days of travel, today I arrived at the Keep. With me I also carried some tomes of magical enchantment to donate. I hope the scholars there will find them useful. There I met the Gatewarden of Candlekeep, Isabella, and an adventurer named Daelin. After learning that I am a paladin of my Lord who seeks to join the Beregost church, she told me to contact Eldarian for initiation as he is the leader of the church. Now I know who is the one I should contact!

Isabella and Daelin helped me to sort all the tomes I carried there. Although not all of the tomes are of great value as they are quite common, I am still glad that Isabella found a couple of more useful ones. Besides the donation, I also came to the Keep to seek knowledge of the my Lord as well as His paladin orders. Isabella gladly offered her help, and she needs around five to six days to complete the research. She also offered me a tome decorated with gems about Amn upon learning that I might continue on my pilgrimage to its capital Athkatla. This is very kind of her! I shall continue to donate tomes to the Keep should I find more rarer ones to further the Keep's cause in preserving knowledge.

After that I had an exchange with Isabella and Daelin, but it made short by the news of a drow appearing in Cloakwood. The drow named Lissal seemly made numerous incursions to the surface, terrorizing the region. Isabella immediately contacted her allies to organize a hunt for the drow and had to leave me and Daelin as well as the messenger of the news in the Keep. For me, I wish to join the hunt, but since I am already exhausted from travel, I feared that I am only a burden for the party. Thus I retreated to the inn at the Keep to rest for the day.

Attached in this page of the journal is a paper containing a list of tomes Gyren donated to the Keep. He probably wrote it to keep a record.

25th of Flamerule, 1352

I returned to Beregost from Candlekeep after a two-day journey. And there was good news awaited me! A Dawnpriest of the Beregost church attempted to contact me at the inn. Unfortunately I was away and could not receive the letter, but the owner of the inn kept the letter and handed it to me when I returned to the inn. Seeing the Lathanderite seal on the letter, I could not hold my smile, knowing that the church must have received my message. I carefully read the letter at my room and headed out to the temple immediately in hope of contacting the Dawnpriest. In spite of my weary body from all the travel, I rushed in haste to the temple. Yet again, I found no one inside, and so I wrote a message to be left for the Dawnpriest when she returns. Although I have yet to see my fellow brothers and sisters, at least there is some progress!

From my travel in the past two days, I also met Boris Vyacheslaw the Knight-Commander of Thay and Freki the dwarf en route. They were sparring at that time and invited me to join. Seeing no harm in it and a chance to learn from fellow warriors, I agreed. The two have two distinct fighting styles. In the first round, Sir Vyacheslaw knocked me down first and following was his furious flurry of strikes. I was utterly defeated before there was any opening for counterattack. Then I faced Freki. The dwarf is a master of defense. He is skilled in wielding shield and equally skilled is his footwork. He relentlessly blocked my strikes and dodged my attacks, then slowly wearing me down through his axe. I was humbled. At the end I could not touch him in any single strike. I learnt a lot in this sparring practices. But more than that, Sir Vyacheslaw bestowed me a paladin helmet before we departed. I refused to accept as I am not worthy and can't accept it for nothing based on my paladin ethos. But he insisted and so I reluctantly accepted. And in return I shall offer my aid should the knight-commander seek my help. He then asked me to give his regard and salutation to Brother Al'maire whom he met in the past. This is nothing compare to his gift. I will not forget my debt to him. I give him my promise. And again I heard of Brother Al'maire's name. It must be my Lord's providence!

6th of Mirtul, 1356

Four years ago after briefly conversing with Dawnpriest Alesea Abbot of the Song of Morning Temple, I pressed on my pilgrimage to Amn. Now I once again set foot on the town of Beregost. I wish to bear good tidings with my arrival, but on my way here I learned an act of great vile against the Morninglord - necromancy.

Just south of Beregost, I saw two men detained by a duo - one presumably a sling-wielding hin, while the other a member of the Radiant Heart. According to the duo, the detainees violated the law by constructing an altar to worship Myrkul and summoned a dozen of undead. This is blasphemy and I couldn't imagine such evil acts would happen so close to Beregost under the Morn of Lathander! I joined with their interrogation of the necromancers but learned nothing useful - only their names, Balkoth and Loren Bass, and a third one of their gang, a dwarf, escaped through teleportation. Unfortunately, using trickery, the two necromancers escaped. The Radiant Heart will report this incident to his senior, and I offered to report this to the Beregost church since we, Lathanderites, detested seeing the dead being disturbed and toyed with ill intent. I just submitted a report regarding this encounter to the Most Radiant Kelddath Ormlyr and hope that the church will not tolerate such crime be committed so near to the church and will act accordingly.

There was not a single decision I made in my life I would regret like the one that I made today. I was wondering the Wood of Sharp Teeth and picking mushrooms for Chef Basil and found an extremely suspicious box floating on a pond of blood. Such a sight already told me that it was of great evil nature. Out of my oath to the Morninglord, I could not just let it openly lying around and sought to get rid of it. Unfortunately, my knowledge in the arcane art is unable to determine its true nature, but thanks to a potion I pick up from my adventure, I was able to discern that the evil aura radiating from the box comes from none other than Bane. Nonetheless, I made a foolish decision that I think I will regret for the rest of my life - I put my hand into the box, hoping to get rid of it. Upon putting my hand in it, I felt my skin tingle and from tingle turned into fear. Quickly I pulled out my hand, and out of fear and survival instinct, I fled the scene.

Oh the Dawn, the Morn, oh Lathander! Please accept my confession that I was so foolish and let my body take over my will when I was facing evil!

23rd of Mirtul, 1356

Today, as if the Morn had shone upon my way, I made a breakthrough in contacting the church members of the Song of the Morning Temple and had met some interesting people. While I was organizing my inventory by the campfire in the Eastern Farmland just outside of the Gate, I encounter some members of the Order of the Radiant Heart. Among them was a fellow Lathanderite, Dawnbringer Tashia Galey. After we conversed briefly, I learned that the Lathanderite church is trying to plant a church in the Gate and offered my help in this endeavor.

After that, I accompanied Dawnbringer Tashia and other members of the Order a sortie into the Fields of Dead. With our combined strength, we put many undead to rest and successfully defeated the Dracolith in the Vault. After returning to the Gate to rest up, Dawnbringer Tashia introduced me to Dawnsinger Aspen Meynolt. From our conversation, it seems that planting a church in the Gate is no easy task - it requires money as well as political and popular support. I will surely do whatever I can to make this possible, to bring glory of our Lord to the Gate.

Parting with Dawnbringer Tashia and Dawnsinger Aspen, I resumed organizing my inventory, particularly the gemstones and books I collected over the years of travels and adventures. In the process, I met a warrior, whose name I unfortunately did not have a chance to be acquainted with. But he told me of a place called Underdark, more specifically the Upperdark, that according to his description is a totally another world and has an entrance in the Troll Claws Hills. Knowing that I love pursuing knowledge, he also shared with me the ruins of a once-great library near Beregost. It is located near the Wyvern nests south of Beregost; the monsters there according to his experience were not so tough but the traps and puzzles inside were deadly. One needs a group of intelligent and wise men as well as expert thieves to complete these tests of mind and wit.

He also told me about his mother's illness. His mother's time in this world at best has only one year left, and nothing he tried would heal his mother. Hearing such a heavy news I offered him to keep her mother in my prayers to the Morninglord. In return, he offered me a valuable armor. How could I accept that! I just simply offered kind words and nothing more! I refused, but he insisted. I reluctantly accepted only on the condition of offering him some monetary compensation. The amount I could offer him was only a fraction of the value of the armor. Not only that as he recounted the armor accompanied him with battles, especially with fighting the fire giants. Oh this armor must meaned a lot to him. And what I can do to honor such generosity is to fight in the name of the Morninglord and hope that Lathander will alleviate the suffering of his mother.

Oh the Morn, the Dawn, oh Lathander, please hear me prayer!

8th of Eleasis, 1356 - In search of knowledge at Candlekeep

I have organized my inventory and checked with excess books that I collected over the years, but among them one particular scroll piqued my curiousity and thus I set to Candlekeep in search of an answer. In Candlekeep, I met Miss Lucia, who kindly handled the ordinary books I offered to the Keep and provided an answer to my inquiry.

The scroll in question has the ability to summon a creature named "Orglash," which I have unheard of. According to Miss Lucia, it is a spirit from the elemental plane. For the lack of my knowledge in the elemental plane, I was concerned with whether such spirit is of evil nature. Luckily, as elementals are primordial forces, they are neither good nor evil. I am relieved upon hearing Miss Lucia's answer. I have no use of the service of such spirit nor the ability to do so. It seems only a person of great power in the nature, presumably an archdruid or a great shaman, is able to call forth such being. I donated the scroll to the Keep to study the scroll further. In fact neither Miss Lucia nor I have seen such scroll before - it might be a valuable research topic of elemental lore.

After that we discussed about knowledge contained in books, particular about the danger it contains. Miss Lucia shared with me a recent development that a man in the Gate, unaware of the knowledge, possessed an old tome that is able to call forth a fiend from the Nine Hells! Fortunately, said tome is now under the safekeeping of the Keep, lest it would be fallen into the wrong hands. Accroding to Miss Lucia, ancient tomes of long lost lore scattered around the Realms, in dangerous places where evils collect such lore for malign intents. To people who are unaware of the value of the knowledge they contain, they are just old and dusty tomes. But in the wrong hands and minds, they are dangerous tools and, perhaps, weapons. Such is the danger of knowledge, and we must not let such thing happens.

Attached in this page of the journal is a list of tomes Gyren donated to the Keep. He probably wrote it for recordkeeping.

3rd of Eleint, 1356 – the Gem Collector of Greenest

It seems quite peaceful recently around Beregost. Aside from regular sorties, nothing suspicious happened. So, I took the time to organize the inventory that I amassed over the years of my pilgrimage far and near the Sword Coast. To my surprise, the long-overdue organization of my inventory revealed that I possess quite a large collection of various colorful gems. Originally considering taking up the trade of a craftsman after retirement, such a life seems far from me now with my tenure starting at Beregost. This gave me a headache as to how to deal with these gems.

Luckily, I saw the advertisement of Mr. Arorn of Greenest who wishes to buy gems in bulk. Praise be Lathander! Mr. Arorn’s endeavor just cured my headache! I immediately sent a message to Mr. Arorn to see whether he was willing to buy my collection of gems, and we met the next day to conduct our transaction. Upon calculating the value of my gems, Mr. Arorn was willing to offer a tower shield of strong arms and a scimitar of a Chauntean knight in exchange. An offer I gladly accepted. We chatted a bit about his gem-collecting endeavor, and Mr. Arorn revealed that the gems will be used to craft a suit of armor. Such a novel idea of creation! With these gems, the armor will no doubt reflect the radiance of the Morn! I am sure the Morninglord will bestow a fruitful result to such an endeavor!
