Winding Water Dungeon CL 15-17(ish)

Unread post by Rad-Icarus »

I'm working on a dungeon to be connected to the Winding Waters exterior area that will provide challenge to PCs in the 15-17ish CL range (late teens into early epic)

I should be able to keep the filesize pretty small, as the concept here is pretty much based on layout and large high-vaulted ceilings without a ton of placeables or environmental objects.

I'm aiming for a two floor dungeon ultimately, but it can be easily truncated to one, and build future-proofed to have a second floor later depending on how large the file sizes and amount of time I can put into it now.

I will update this thread as any major developments or complications happen.

I find the most difficulty leveling between level 16-21. If the dungeon could be expanded for another level or two, I'd be most appreciative.

Any alternative to grinding Xvarts/Wyverns would be amazing.

- CL (creature level) is not the same as your level CL 15-17 is roughly 18-23ish

The Winding Waters area itself if a great alternative to the Wyverns now. When the dungeon goes in this will expand that potential.

Rad-Icarus is my hero for building areas... He probably already knows that he will eventually hate me as I continue eating his time over the coming weeks/months with ideas for new areas for him to build if/when the server ever splits...(I apologize in advance, RI)

If the dungeon is for PCs of 15-17, then the CR of the Area would be 15-17 for a balance group of PCs of Levels 15-17, but more likely rated at CR 19-21 if soloing.

As it relates to CR, the way it was explained to me is that it's an estimate at best so I would not get to hung up on CR vs. level range. In any case we all know that CR of an area isn't always a good indicator of your characters risk in the area since different types of PC builds are going to have different experiences. A level 20 max DEX sneak attack character will struggle mightily in the Fields of the Dead since no Epic Precision means they might do around 1-4 damage per hit against crit immune undead. There are other examples for other types of characters based on defensive vs. offensive capabilities. The point is these forums have seen many players discuss how their character can only solo in areas ~5-8 below their CR while others talk about soloing areas ~3-4 above their characters effective level.

Point being, who cares? Just give us those juicy new areas to explore and keep 'em coming!!! The lack of long, interesting dungeons from level 11-19 is quite frustrating and the massive drop in XP once you hit 21 means that you really need a lot more areas that are for levels 20+ just to avoid going to the same 2 or 3 area's over and over (and over ad infinitum). With the server split hopefully coming soon (TM) we will have more space so any skilled area builders that want to start working on new dungeons and the like should start working now so we can all enjoy the fruits of their labors.

And lets all thank them profusely for those efforts cuz without them things get stale quickly!

There is a practical issue to care about actually, Chaddo, in that our Wiki lists Areas by CR, not by PC’s expected Level.

So it is more than fair to get this cleared up, since using appropriate terminology ALWAYS helps in understanding an issue.
