What if an npc allowed us to move one single enchantment from one item to another non-mithral, non-adamantine item of the same type, and the "donor" item was destroyed in the process? Let's say that it costs..... 200,000 gold to do. Not sure, something more than 100,000 but less than 500,000. Also, the recipient item cannot have more than 2 special properties at the end of the process.
Example:
You see a gnome standing in the Temple of Mystra (and one somewhere in the Underdark, too, to be fair) next to a pair of magicians' workbenches. One is labeled 'Donor Item', the other is labeled 'Recipient Item'. He twirls his frankly impressive moustache while looking at you expectantly. Upon speaking with him, you discover that he can move a magical enchantment from one item to another, IF a few conditions are met.
1) Neither item can be mithral or adamantine. The magical nature of those two metals interfere with the process
2) Both items must be of the same basic type, but don't have to be of the same exact type. For example, you could move one single enchantment from a scythe to a short sword, it doesn't have to be from scythe to scythe. Likewise you could move an enchantment from a chain shirt to a full plate. You cannot, though, move an enchantment from a ring to an amulet. You cannot move an enchantment from a cloak to a pair of boots.
3) You can move only ONE enchantment at a time, and doing so destroys the "donor" item.
4) The "recipient" item cannot have more than 1 enchantment on it already at the start of the process. Anything with too much magic stored in it interferes with the process. Materials listed in the "special properties" section, such as alchemical silver or cold iron, do not count towards this limit.
5) The "donor" item can have any number of enchantments on it, but you can ONLY transfer ONE of them to the recipient and the whole donor item is destroyed in the process.
6) Only permanent, non-activated enchantments can be transferred. Limited use enchantments, such as "use per day" abilities and "charges per use", abilities cannot be transferred. Likewise "use item: special, unlimited uses per day", etc, cannot be transferred. The IC logic of this is that any enchantment that requires active input from the user is too tailor-made for the specific item it's on. Such magics cannot just be moved to something else. The OOC logic is that we can't risk people screwing up carefully scripted special items or encroaching on the wand trade.
When you talk to the gnome he explains all the above to you. You place the item that has the enchantment you want into the "donor" workbench and the item you want enchanted in the "recipient" workbench. The gnome checks that all the above conditions are met (only one item in each workbench, both same basic type of item, neither is adamantine or mithral, recipient has no more than one enchantment already, etc) and then he presents you with a list of all the special properties on the "donor" item (except material properties and activated abilities). You choose ONE of those to move onto the recipient item, pay your money, the donor goes "BANG" and disintegrates, and the recipient gets the enchantment.
E.T.A. : Weight reduction properties and arcane spell failure adjustment properties should also be non-transferable from the donor item and not count towards the 1 enchantment limit on the recipient item
Edited again to add: There should also be an option, by placing an item in the "donor" workbench and nothing in the "recipient" workbench to remove an enchantment without destroying the item or transfering that enchantment anywhere. This SHOULD work on spell-like abilities and use per day abilities. Not all of us like that kind of thing on weapons, it messes with the quickslots in that if a weapon has an activated ability and you equip it from a quickslot, clicking the quickslot again triggers the activated ability instead of unequipping the weapon. I personally HATE that.

Re: Enchantment Transference
That would be a great way to get some crafting in the game while we wait on a crafting system...
Would also solve the problem of underrepresented weapon types we were discussing in another thread.
