Remove illicit items from the Thayan Enclave store

Unread post by Xorena »

The Law of Crafting states:
The Law of Crafting: This law dictates what the Thayans will and will not create for sale to the general public. Normally an enclave only produces potions, scrolls (of up to 4th-level spells), wands, +1 armor, +1 weapons, and minor wondrous items. None of these may have abilities easily used for crime (such as potions of invisibility or a wand of charm person) or overtly destructive (such as a wand of fireball). They may also cast spells for hire. In general, the Thayans never create an item worth more than 2,000 gp, because such items dominate limited resources that could be used to produce cheaper and more desirable products. All items produced in an enclave are required to bear the mark of the Red Wizards and the insignia of the city where the enclave is located. They also refuse to create dangerous items (as described above) because should someone be harmed with an item created in an enclave, the Thayans could be held responsible. This policy also prevents such items from being used against them.
Currently the following items are for sale on the Enclave store, which violate the Law of Crafting:

Potion of Invisibility
Dimension Door scroll (potentially allows a thief to transport behind a locked door)

Please consider removing these items from the store in an effort to come closer to lore. Thank you!

And that is the only place you can buy invisibility potions (at least at low level), so they'd need to be added elsewhere.

As many bartenders have said, "You don't have to go home but you can't stay here."

It shouldn't be in the Enclave.

Okay. I was unaware of this lore when I added these items to the store, I'll replace them with something else. Generally speaking for edits to your own guild hall you can just poke the DM or dev team directly.

As a bystander... There isn't anything written in The Law of Crafting that would preclude the Guild from selling most anything if they so chose.

Laws are compulsory, which means they are obligatory under the threat of penalty or force. Normally an enclave only - means something that "ought to happen"... and the inclusion of this stipulation implies an enclave can exercise choice. In general, - means "not limited to" and this modifies the Thayans never create an item worth more than 2,000 gp, to mean Thayans can elect to set the item's worth at a value less than 2,000 gp. The rationale for setting the monetary amount is explained, which is why 2,000 gp is more synonymous with "not to exceed".

This excerpt specifically cites "potions of invisibility or a wand of charm" and "a wand of fireball" as criminal enablers or overtly destructive, all of which are later characterized as dangerous items... They also refuse to create dangerous items (as described above) because should someone be harmed with an item created in an enclave, the Thayans could be held responsible. This policy also prevents such items from being used against them. The refusal to create dangerous items - is accurately described as a policy.

A policy constitutes an objective, set by an organization, government, guild, etc. Here, the specified objective is to indemnify the Thayans against legal accountability for an unknown future. If the guild secured assurances they would not be held responsible for a crime or overtly destructive act... they would have met the policy's objective and would be free to create items at will so long as they did not exceed an item worth 2,000 gold pieces.

Cheers!
