New Magic Item: Rune Staves

Unread post by kitteninablender »

So the server has a series of feats that I really, really like. The Runes of Fire, Ice, etc. The ones that requires you to have a spell prepared. So it hit me:

Salim has Craft Wondrous Item. A feat that's currently useless. However, I made another thread some time ago that people seemed to like. The idea of the Craft Wondrous Item feat being used to recharge magic items. An update I think the server sorely needs IMHO, but that's a rant for the other thread.

So the idea I had for items to be created: Rune Staves. The Rune Staves are elemental staves that are tied to each of the elements, and each of the respective Runes that exist as selectable feats.

These items are of course very expensive. But then it hit me. Why not allow the Craft Wondrous Item feat be able to craft THESE particular items?

Because, essentially, these are replications of Netherese Blast Scepters. Which were created with...dun dun dun dun dun...CRAFT WONDROUS ITEM!!!

I have taken the liberty of creating one for each of the Rune spells, listed below. And I would highly appreciate your feedback. :)

Rune Stave of Fire:

Bonus Feat: Rune of Fire
Fire Resistance 10%
Bonus Wizard Spell Slot 1
Bonus Sorceror Spell Slot 1
Bonus Cleric Spell Slot 1
Bonus Druid Spell Slot 1
Bonus Favored Soul Slot 1
Bonus Paladin Spell slot 1

Then simply rinse and repeat for each of the different Runes.

Balance-wise: You can have them all. But it's expensive. And you can only have ONE AT A TIME.

But because it also gives you a bonus 1st level spell slot: You will ALWAYS, basically, have a 1st-level spell slot to use a rune available to you at all times.

What do you think?

Fair? Balanced? Yes? No? Maybe?

EDIT: Also make a version for Paladins...that is a SCEPTER!! Which functions as a MACE!!

Alright. So. What I did not realize when I made this post originally is that the Lesser Orb spells do not trigger the runes apparently.

Do you think we should also add the Lesser Orb spells to the list of spells that trigger the rune? To allow them to trigger? Yes? or no?

As a Wizard, I'm fine with or without it. Yes we are useless 95% of the time, but that's kind of our signature >< The other 5% of the time we kick ass.

[Speculation] Also putting these staves in the game might make people who took these feats feel ripped off and want a free RCR?

Sounds cool and all, but would this not be achieved with use of a wand or a scroll? I'd love to see crafting being expanded, but I'm not sure if creating permanent items with free feats is the way to go. I fear powerbuilding around them (not that I would know how to build such a thing).

Unfortunately, part of the game is building around what gear you want or know you have access to. Any WoW player can confirm such. That's unfortunately part of any MMO. And while this game isn't an MMO...it's a bunch of players with randomly generated monsters and loot. It's what we call MMO-Lite.

But it's okay. I consider BGTSCC the King of MMO-Lite Beer. ;)

Jokes aside: This is one of those items that isn't too insanely powerful, and it wouldn't necessarily make those who took the feats feel ripped off because it means that they don't have to use their weapon slot, which is important for some polymorph based mages, in order to use them.
