Bugged/Broken Chest in Reaching wood.

Unread post by Gaelan Thorne »

on two separate occasions I have been one shot and lost XP to a chest that had no trap. I play a high wis build with a heavy investment on spot/listen/search.
So I have an impossible time believing I am not able to at least see the trap indication. On top of that there are zero messages popping up in the log that I set a trap off or even took damage, I just get instantly teleported to the fugue. The first time I wrote off to me being clumsy but the second time I sat there at the chest with search activated and waited for the chest to turn red and it never did. And considering I have lost 4.4k XP to it I think it bears mentioning.

The chest in question is the one where the Fiendish Gnoll boss is at, outside the "Den o' Gnolls"

Some of the epic traps have very high DCs, I myself play someone that handles traps and missed one yesterday.

Happened a 3rd time with witnesses, 4 people, no one saw a trap. I went to open the chest outside the ice giant fortress and got insta killed.

Trapfinding
Rogues (and only rogues) can use the search skill to locate traps when the task has a Difficulty Class higher than 20. Finding a nonmagical trap has a DC of at least 20, or higher if it is well hidden. Finding a magic trap has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it. Rogues (and only rogues) can use the Disable Device skill to disarm magic traps. A magic trap generally has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it.

Can this be a reason why you can't find a trap, possibly?
From wiki description, having no rogue means you can't find a trap with DC higher than 20. I'm not sure game mechanics work exactly this way, but this feat makes me suspect it does,

I don't have Rogue levels but I can't speak for the other 3 people that were present. Just seems really broken that I would hit 3 traps in a day that were utterly undetectable and killed me instantly with no chance to even stabilize and get up. If this is to be the norm than anyone with less than 300 health trying to play solo and loot is rendered incapable of doing so unless they play a meta build with rogue levels in it.

And in 2 out of the 3 cases it happened so fast that I never saw a trap go off and never even got to make a saving roll.

That's the reason i have summon creature 1 wand with my non-rogue PCs. So i can check chests for traps safely. I recommend :)

It does. At least BG's traps are one-shots and can be broken by summons! Most of the traps on Ravenloft are just as lethal, and will keep firing every time until you disarm them... Scary.

Yeah even Boots gets spanked by chests. Think last night we got spanked by 230 dmg. It’s just hazards of duty. I am a high Spot/Search Ranger build as well and I can’t only see the epic traps when she’s on party and she finds them.

So far, while it may sound irritating, but trying to open a chest while you don't have advanced trap detecting feats Rogue levels is a russian roulette.
In fact, it should be like this in epic dungeon, at least to my understanding. Please be careful and use summons or other means to make sure the chest is safe.

It's not really a bug unless you had a PC with trapfinding and high Search skill who used their search mode while being close to it and still didn't detect it.

Hey now, don't go ratting out Boots!! Those electrical traps can be a bitch!

Sometimes the best thing to have on you when disarming chests is the different energy immunities and to have everyone stand further back. There are a few particular chests in games where the group never stands close to Vani... as those chests seem to spawn the ones she has trouble with. (I'm calling you out soggy library in the Vault of the Dead crypt keeper room!)

I've had one group hire Vani out to just do the trap checking and lock picking before for a dungeon and that was fun. :) There are other rogues that I've seen offer services as well... so RP hiring someone out if you can. I know some times when the player number is low it can be a bit harder to find one.. but perhaps put it in your scry message that you are looking for a rogue that can handle traps.
