there are a grand total of 4 in shops, and really only the Manticore is of any use. There are tons of different Scimitars, Falchions, Longswords ect but theres zero love for Greatsword.
I know not many people use them, but I'd bet that might change a bit if there were more to come by that looked a little cooler, maybe some elemental damage ect.

Like for all the umpteen previous posts, this one, and the many future ones I’m sure, the answer is always: custom enhancement system. Something like this.

I like this suggestion, but might change it so that you can't just pay money and select an item enchantment off the menu. Maybe strip an enchantment off a donor item destroying it in the process and transfer it to a recipient item. Recipient item would have to have less than a certain amount of enchantments. Process would still cost a bundle of gold and require some kind of rare focus like gemstones.
This way you'd still create value for the random loot we find that might otherwise be useless (so long as it has one decent enchantment on it).
Put this in place as a kind of stop-gap until a true enchanting system is in. Make it cosmetically somewhat like the item recharger in Sorcerous Sundries and stick it somewhere that it'd make RP sense like the Thayan Enclave as a valuable service they offer that makes it a temptation to tolerate with their weird racist slavery s***.
A quick touch on the crafting, to keep things in mind. I would recommend a failure chance and ways to reduce that failure chance but not take it down to zero. For example, having extra supplies. Twice the gems or twice the items with the same enchantment and twice the base item, would reduce the chance for failure. This creates loss of gold for characters that are 10 years old and have millions, but gives a lot of opportunity for new characters to hold special items as they find them in Hope's to combine them later with low chance of failure.
As for the great swords, I think there are plenty options when using magic to enhance the weapons. Greater magic weapon elixirs grant +4 and the scabbard of greater keen in Beregost allows for +3 weapons as a cost efficient method for weaponry. The whet stone in the blushing mermaid grants keen edge. So very easy to have a silver or cold iron great sword for relatively cheap with enhancements and extras from random loot generation. Combining the random creation and magical enhancements allows for very unique and useful weaponry. Adding additional weapons to shops will create less variation in character outfitting. Everyone will end up with the best items available overtime. While this availability is nice, it reduces item usefulness from merchants making some items completely obsolete. A store full of 3 or 4 greatswords and everyone choosing the same one doesn't make much sense to fill the shop with junk that people don't buy.
Another option for crafting could be enhancement retainability. Say a character uses a wand of keen on a sword 100 times, maybe the weapon could start having a chance to roll to retain that feature. So 101st time keen is placed on the weapon, there is a 0.1% chance it has to maintain that property after a rest. Should it hold the keen property after the 110th rest, it would have 1% chance to retain that property upon the next rest. So over time, the weapon would maintain more and more chance to retain that property over time. Of course this would have to be dictated by only a single casting per rest would count and only count after level 20 or 25 for example so a level 1 toon working with their second computer on a different account with their level 30 caster, could not abuse weapon retention in this way. Just a random idea popping up during this message.
