A Practical Herbalism Guide

Unread post by Fire Wolf »

(( Work in progress!
It may take a while to finish putting this together. This guide is intended to cover the herbalism system as thoroughly as possible, but as it is written from an in-character perspective there will be a very small number of recipes missing either because my character doesn't have access to Underdark ingredients, or because he would object to making the recipe available in his book; for example the love potion recipe, anything requiring druidic secrets, or something meant only for harm.
Feel free to message me if you have questions about anything not covered by this guide. I love the herbalism system! It's awesome! ))

A Practical Herbalism Guide
By Teris Ynarno

I'm putting together this book with the hope it will help people to learn about and appreciate the wonderful plants that grow around us, as well as presenting recipes to bring healing and wellbeing to those who make them.

Please keep in mind to harvest responsibly. Take only what you need, without causing unnecessary harm, and leave enough behind for the plants to regrow naturally.

Drying and Disassembling

Amburworth Incense
1 portion of Amburworth leaves
Mortar and pestle

Amburworth Incense can be burned as a treatment for violent coughing, swollen airways, and pneumonia. Light the incense and then put out the flame, allowing it to smolder. Breathe in the smoke for healing properties.

Dry one bundle of Amburworth leaves and reduce them with a mortar and pestle.
Combine with a base of powdered wood and resin and make sure that the mixture is very finely ground.
Mix with a combustible agent and slowly add distilled or floral water until the result is gummy and pliable but still holds its shape.
Kneed it very well then form it into a stick, or roll it onto a prepared stick of wood.
Leave the finished product to dry for at least a couple of weeks in a location away from sunlight and heat.

Dried Bloodpurge
At least 1 Bloodpurge leaf
Herb Pouch

A leaf of dried Bloodpurge can be eaten as an antidote for poisons and venoms.

Wash the Bloodpurge leaves in cool water and pat them dry.
Hang one or more leaves inside a specially made herb pouch with lots of airflow to protect them from dust as they dry without trapping in moisture. Do not overfill the bag.
Drying may take one to three weeks depending on humidity.

Dried Rosehips
Fruit of at least 2 roses

Rosehips can be eaten and used in tea and jellies. They're a good source of energy.

Wash the Rosehips thoroughly, then cut them in half and remove the seeds and hairs from inside.
Carefully rinse them out then pat them dry.
Lay the hips on a drying screen out in warm and dry weather.
The sun will dry them in about a day or longer depending on the size of the Rosehips. If they haven't finished drying, take them inside until the next day then place them out again to finish.

Feather Skin Flower Petals
1 Feather Skin Flower
Herb pouch

These flowers are imported and not grown locally.
Place a single petal on the tongue and allow it to dissolve to cure any natural disease.

Carefully secure the flower and slowly work with a small tool to remove the petals at their base. Allow the petals to come loose rather than forcing them, or they will likely tear.
Place the petals in a herb pouch, laying them out apart from one another and flattening the pouch to secure them. Store the pouch without folding to protect the petals from damage.

Rosewater can be used for skincare to reduce redness and puffiness, or used in recipes to add a floral taste.

Separate the petals from your flower and gently wash them in water.
Put them in a pot and pour in distilled water until the petals have just been covered.
Place a lid on the pot and simmer the petals between thirty and forty-five minutes until they lose their color, then leave it to cool fully.
Strain the water into a jar to remove the petals.
Store the rosewater in a cool dark place.
Keeping it chilled will help it last longer.
If you want to use a preservative, add one small spoon of distilled alcohol per two cups of water while simmering.
