*He had just finished catching a trout and decided to take a walk to stretch his legs. Little did the man know it would be the very last evening walk he would ever take. The approach was subtle, only the sound of seagulls and crickets filled the night. Unaware was the mistake. Twin blades quickly hissed, keen sharp metal bit into the flesh of his back. He quickly fell to the ground and began to bleed out. His voice weak, his eyes fluttering but he was trying to see his attacker but so none. He summoned what little energy he had left to ask one question.*

W-who...a-re....y-you?

Image

*The answer was only another stab to the body just before he felt himself being looted. His vision blurred, the world around him fading and just before his last breath another stab in the eye came just to make sure the man was silenced. Blood stained the grass moments after but there was no body for it was pushed down the nearby cliff to fall into the ocean soon feeding sharks or fish. There was no witnesses, there was no chance of a scream or a cry. Only the blood stained remained someplace, somewhere in Ulgoths Beard.*

*He was having a refreshing morning, his line cast waiting for a good catch. Appearing to be a mere fishermen he was, but was he really? The nearby guard was patrolling, fending off lurking Sahuagin's. But what the guard didnt see was the incoming shadow that had slipped passed unseen, unnoticed, silent as death itself. The guard hired to watch his man made the very mistake any guard can do. He took his eyes off him. The figure leaped into existence, daggers pulled from their sheaths and plunged into the mans back piercing his lungs, gasping for air that only seeped through the many bleeding holes. *

*The hired guard whom failed to protect the man he was hired to protect would tale the tell of how he looked away for only a brief moment, only to look back and see a lifeless body before he cursed himself for he knew he botched the job.*

With himself down south and unable to directly assist, word from Derik Ranloss would be received by the handyman and bouncers secure what they can tight for the Last Anchor pub as well as offer what help they could with their time and ability to the local residents to get their houses shored up in case the storm comes to call.

The lurking storm in the horizon to the west over the ocean has left the city under no uncertain terms tense, for seafaring folk and any businesses with trade over the ocean. Baldurs Gate residents wake with the sight in the distance, a reminder in the day with the horizon blocked with stormclouds, and in the night an everpresent light display of lightning strikes. When the winds turn eastward blowing over the city, its citizens speak as if one could smell the electricity in the air.

Nevertheless, the city is abuzz with the reinforcing and securing of houses and assets (if one could afford it), in preparation of the eventuality of the storm passing right over Baldurs Gate.

The House of the SeaQueen, Church of Umberlee has been asking for offerings. The Umberlants have taken to bringing the offerings into the Chiontar, which is customary.

On the 23nd of Tarsakh 1360, two candlemarks after midnight - the stormy skies over Ulgoth's Beard parted in a miraculous display to reveal a splendorous moon shining down upon the sleepy town. From above, several strange phenomena occured.

A celestial bridge of bright azure, twinkling motes descended from the heavens to form a link between the cliffs above Ulgoth's Beard and the moon itself. There they formed a gleaming bluish light in the night. Witnesses were granted sight of a pale fire of the moon shooting down infront of a few on-lookers above the village, closely followed by a pearly white light descending onto same site to grace one of those present.

For a night and a day, the blessed event took place, giving a breath of peaceful respite from the onslaught of the storms.

*During the early morning within Ulgoths Beard was a man that often strolled around pick pocketing the locals to include merchants. A greedy habit the man had. Ulgoth was just a temporary place for him to dwell for he needed to lay low after his biggest score. He felt the large canary diamond in his pocket with the sense of triumph. In the city a couple of tendays ago, he had picked a mark, held him at knife point and searched his belongings. "What a find" He thought to himself. After fleeing into the darkness, he took the boat to Ulgoths Beard where he decided to lay low after the job. He breathed in the fresh air just when he was about to take a piss behind a building when suddenly he felt the plunging blades piercing through his body. Blackness, silence, the sense of the world fleeting until he knew nothing*

*Moments later the coppery scent of blood filled the room, the source of the smell wasn't so easily found. A body was dragged and shoved in a corner and pushed under a set of stairs. But not before the body was searched. That same canary diamond that was once in the pocket of a man, was now in more elegant hands. The ultimate mistake a thief can make, is stealing from the wrong person. If ever someone enters one of the storage rooms in Ulgoths Beard, the smell of a decomposing body would surely fill their nostrils. The body unrecognizable, too long in its death, the clothing cheap and ragged, likely stolen or swindled. The jacket once had a nice marking of Neverwinter. Too bad its soiled in decay.*

*Rumors in Ulgoths Beard would talk about a night with flying demons and walking flesh abominations attacking travelers. One Watchman of the Beard was likely getting reprimanded if not fired for his cowardice. Murmurs would mention things like box of chocolates, portals and demons. Detailed information would likely be found by meeting some of the Watchmen.*

A common sight in Ulgoth's Beard now, the half bronze dragon Merenia spends most of her time on the shore. As many dead fish have washed up on shore recently, she keeps a vigilant eye on the situation. She pays particular attention to keeping the large fire on the beach going, and tosses any dead fish washed up on shore on the fire, ensuring no animals or people are eating them. If asked why, she explains the fish have died an unnamed poison, as determined by Revered Sister Ashenie of the temple of Ilmater in Baldur's Gate.

She also reminds the fishermen to be careful about their catches, and to avoid a certain area outside of Ulgoth's Beard.

Those of sharp eye who would walk the road to village of Ulgoth's Beard might notice three figures, walking near shore, swiftly and silently moving among trees.

Ranger, his faithful wolf companion and young apprentice since the early morning were busy with checking the coastline. Prayers to Forest Queen were spoken, preparations were made. Even nature itself was asked, as the group investigated shore, trying to find any more spots of dead fish being washed to the beaches. The corpses of sea creatures would be destroyed on spot, before the three venturing forth

Having been gone for some hours, the half dragon Merenia returns to Ulgoth's Beard, landing on the beach. There she stays, every waking moment, vigilantly watching the ocean. Once or twice every day when waves of poisoned fish wash ashore, she goes about collecting them and throwing them on the fire, usually calling on Barnacle Bob and Ferryman Nelvin to help her. Every now and then she steps into the water and even goes for a swim near the shore, to have a look underwater.

Occasionally, a small pseudodragon is with her, either sitting curled up in her lap if she sits down by the fire, or on her shoulder when she walks. But sometimes the pseudodragon also flies about, chasing off any birds who try to pick dead fish out of the water.

Brualot of the Golden Wheel merchant company arrives on a coastal trade ship bringing ashore a small test cargo. Thanking his host he directs dock workers to move his barrels to the market area. He looks along the coast spotting the usual suspects patrolling the shore line for dead fish. Even this seasoned traveller is taken aback by a half dragon on watch. He is soon at the market promoting his wares. fresh fish from a safe distance for those desiring the best at premium prices and more mundane salted barrels of fish for discerning customers missing their fish staple.

He remains a day or two testing the local appetite for currently rare but expensive fish. he takes the opportunity to promote a reviving trade company and explore local demands.

First came a wave of dead fish, as had been happening once or twice every day recently. Then, suddenly the two on watch saw something else moving in the water. Colossal snakes, sahuagin, undead, elementals and crab people assaulted the beach of Ulgoth's Beard. The bard Sylvanor and the half bronze dragon Merenia held off the attackers while a message had been sent to Rose Wintertal to call upon the Flaming Fist, who Grand Duke Eltan had promised to send to the aid of Ulgoth's Beard. Soon after, both Rose and Mathilde Wintertal arrived in Ulgoth's Beard to help hold off the attack, and even more adventurers came to the aid of the small village as the attack went on.

Eventually the soldiers of the Flaming Fist arrived and reinforced the weary adventurers. And soon after, the attacking forces retreated. Ulgoth's Beard was safe. For now.

In the aftermath of this recent attack, the Last Anchor staff are instructed to distribute non-seafood food to the guards, soldiers, and villagers to help ease the evening, provide refreshment to anyone who was repairing damaged structures or fields, as well as in the way of thanks for the Flaming Fist and adventurers who came to help to town.

Barricading in progress
After today's attack, the bronze half dragon Merenia suggests to the officers of the Flaming Fist stationed in Ulgoth's Beard that they should begin barricading parts of the beach, so as to funnel the enemies through a spot that is most advantageous. Indeed, she uses the limited resources available to her in the evacuated town to begin exactly that, and - with the help of the warrior adventurer Nathaniel Collins - begins to move empty carts and wagons, heavy tables and benches from around the town and sacks of sand, dirt or other things to the beach.

The encampment and barricade expands and grows
As her watch continues, Merenia the half dragon works hard to expand upon the barricade and sets up tents for her fellow watchers to seek shelter from the weather, find rest or privacy inside.

Some days ago, a true bronze dragon and the commonly seen bronze half dragon Merenia came out of the ocean with some haste on the beach of Ulgoth's Beard, to the surprise of many of the soldiers guarding it. With serious expressions and determined voices the two shared some words in draconic before both flying off towards the city of Baldur's Gate.

Since that, Merenia has not been seen in Ulgoth's Beard.
