Moonlit Hunters
Image
Balduran harbour. (AI-generated)
In the at highsun, three ships dock in the balduran harbour. The ships all carry the same symbol embroidered on their dark blue sails: A ship inside a crescent moon.

The three ships are of three different sizes: A small, sleek ship, clearly built for speed, has two small ballista up front. The medium ship appear unarmed, but the crew certainly is not. The largest of the ships is a great war galleon, carrying four ballista on each broadside, and its hull is reinforced several places with silvery metal plates of some kind.

The crew of all three ships unload many chests of treasure, and a fair bit of this is distributed among the common folk of the city. Some of the chests are carted off to the outer city, where the crew distribute the treasure among the farmers. One full chest of gold is donated to the church of Tempus. However the majority is sent to the Counting House.

If any of the crew are asked where they found all this treasure, most of them are vague, saying something along the lines of: "Wealth changes hands often upon the sea."

The distribution of wealth from three ships in port accompanied by crew with gold to spend did not arrive without drawing attention.

Traders, opportunists, fraudsters, thieves and worse followed in their wake.

The Dukes may have shown little concern for reports of rising crime but many others took note.
Gamblers at the Elfsong were treated to falling out between those seeking an illicit share of the gambling profits.

Elsewhere a merchant being intimidated in a trap in the sewers was rescued by a charity out rescuing addicts at the time.

In addition there have been reports of wealth exchanging hands at the docks by various dishonest means.

Water Awakes

Throughout the past Tendays, important developments have happened. Though rumours are wild, as they tend to be, there is an undeniable fact about the growing sense of urgency.

Not soon after the matter of the Crimson Spice was laid to rest, an Archon of Justice appeared at the temple of Tyr in Baldur's Gate. Supposedly prompted by the Just God himself to punish an exceedingly vile mortal for the vileness they had committed, she nonetheless chose to remain in the Mortal Realm. The following days have been marked by intense prayer and preaching of Tyr's dogma, teachings and sincere encouragement to right the wrongs, embrace virtue and... Train.

In addition to the Archon's public displays of piety, came a priest of Tyr known as Vhaan de Luca, who's fiery preaching had seen a steadily growing number of the burghers and the poor coming to the Halls of Justice, seeking answers, understanding and even a new path of life. As such, the three temples of the Triad started to grow in those who swear help and duty as Templars and those who offer aid in whatever capacity they can. A smaller number had joined the temples as acolytes.

All three regularly witness the Archon, known as Terragona, The Flame of the Just- her word, her fervour and her advice, at the temple of Tyr. Indeed, many of those who have decided to become templars are speaking with wonder about how the celestial had decided to train them in combat.

* * *

As per the Justice Archon's vague prophecies of a great darkness approaching, Ulgoth's Beard had begun to witness waves of dead fish and other marine life upon its shores. It was not long after that ill-portent that from the waters began erupting sea monsters of various kinds, intent on spreading death and misery. It was after the death of a Paladin of Tyr while, supposedly, fighting a great and terrifying monster that the Archon Terragona had decided to barge in on the Council of Four during their private meeting.

While what exactly was discussed is stuff for rumours, what is clear is that it resulted in the Flaming Fist contingents being sent to reinforce Ulgoth's Beard, evacuate the locals and build fortifications. As far as the military onlookers can say, several companies of the Flaming Fist soldiers have been brought back from the field and stationed back in the city. Baldur's Gate is clearly in preparation to receive some sort of a larger attack than the raids on Ulgoth's Beard.

To add more horror to it all, some ships were reported as having been attacked by sea monsters. Sahuagin, Quelzarn and even an occasional demon. Only two of these raided vessels managed to survive the battle and dock in Baldur's Gate, giving credibility to the ongoing rumours and reports.

* * *

The volunteers and the Shrine of Suffering that take care of former Crimson Spice addicts have noted a slowly progressing decrease in those afflicted with withdrawals or otherwise beneath the poverty line. While the Shrine of Suffering had done an amazing job rescuing and returning a semblance of normal life to many, a lot of those still in the sewers started to vanish. Some of those "vanished" have been seen by the Ilmatari in the city- free from their past troubles and trying to turn over a new leaf-, others still have not been found.

A man known as Ulgoth's Beard ferryman, Nelvin, was found attacking the City Watch Guards in front of the building where the evacuated inhabitants are living, in the Steeps District. The City Watch, supposedly, barely managed to bring the creature down before its magical aura drowned them and all around it.

Of note are the words that Nelvin the Undead has been gurgling out along with filthy water from within his throat:
I partook in the gifts of the sea, then forsook the gods of the depths.
All this I have lost for the smile of a bronze maiden. Head my warning. Always pay tribute to Father.

That event mortified the refugees from Ulgoth's Beard. The funeral service will happen in four days.

In the Eastway District in the morning, passersby would notice an injured man in leathers wandering in a daze. A City Watch officer recognised him and swiftly arrested him; declaring the man to be a known thief by the name of Declan Bonnerac. He appeared relatively easy to apprehend, unable to put up much of a fight as he weakly fell to the ground, and those gathered around watched would hear a pathetic mumble: "tiefling... where is a tiefling."

Whatever the reason he was searching, this man would have no luck, as the City Watch does not employ any tieflings.

Talk circulates in parts of the city of a few incidences over the last few days.

In the Eastway District, in the early afternoon an uncomely human woman reeking of the sewers approaches a tiefling woman with horns, and roughly grabbing her by the arm, attempting to drag her away, "To the sewers, to the sewers." Nearby folk around intervene and hold back the human, who clamors at the tiefling. A city watch guard intervenes, and after the human is restrained, she collapses to the ground, her muscles atrophied. The human woman is nonetheless arrested for her attack.

In the Heapside District, in the late afternoon on the same day, a man is found stabbed to death in an alleyway. He appears to be a simple beggar. There are not many clues, although it is clear the beggar frequented the sewers.

And finally, a group of adventurers - including two Chondathan humans, a halfling, and a half-elf - led by Markus Whitewind, bring a decapitated body of a man to the Shrine of Suffering, who appears to have had his tail cut off. The group speak of seeing a tiefling man ahead of them enter the sewers, and then hearing an eerie feminine call emanate. As they stepped into the sewers, a woman - who looked human with black hair - was standing over the man's body holding his head and tail. They attacked the murderer, but she managed to flee. After bringing the body to the shrine and telling the story, the adventurers set off.

House of Cards trading cartel announce the arrival of a ship from Chult loaded with a variety of exotic goods for the market in Baldur's Gate. A strong presence from House of Cards, investors, and potential customers plan to assemble at the dockside to celebrate. Others suggest given the recent goings on in the city they will be there with local officials and Flaming Fist to ensure the safety of the cargo.

Some outgoing goods for a return south will also be brought including a small but expensive line in fashion promoted by House Divine and destined for southern markets.

A recent fashion desire for star sapphires bound into garments has been the centrepiece for creative garments and raised the price for these gems. This moment has passed now and other market leading items draw top prices.

Those seeking trading profit could do worse than follow House of Cards pricing profile. viewtopic.php?f=17&t=20024&start=585

A House of Cards ship has no sooner left bound for southern waters with high hopes for trading profit than some dockers bypass the less than watchful eye of a guard and his two paymasters carrying a small share of the cargo that ought to be on that ship.

Indeed crime in the docks and the city which has recovered from the threat of spice has settled at a new level just below the watchful eye of the Flaming Fist and the paladins choosing to patrol the city. This a powerful symbol of law and order and yet it is clear the level of criminality has risen a notch from the complaining merchants. Not enough so far to demand expensive city retaliation but a nuisance nonetheless to some.

It is rumoured among the criminals establishing new ways are the so called Thieves Guild an organisation that despite it's name, over the years, does not always drive it's supporters to criminality but for now their position is clearer they will corrupt and steal wherever they can. A situation better than the corruption of spice but nonetheless travellers are minded to guard their goods.

In the noble district House of Cards drew some ire when one of their hot chestnut stalls stopped outside the Oomarsonns mansion and stray coals set alight the building. The roof was damaged and they soon made amends to both the roof and their reputation by replacing the attic of the house. What happened to the chestnuts that night is not known.

InTheFlesh wrote: Sat Aug 24, 2024 4:19 pm In an unlocked docks warehouse, around two dozen Baldurians congregate to levy complaints at their Speaker before the Duchal Courts. He finds that practically all of them have the same recent complaint: The City Watch has been all-but-forcing themselves into their homes late at night, threatening arrest for non-compliance in allowing them to thoroughly search their dwellings. These two dozen are affiliated with The Commons of Baldur's Gate, and the recent excesses committed by the City Watch have clearly left a sour taste in their mouths.

Their Speaker, Rhaeg, offers them a promise: "I'll get answers for you, from th'Watch or Moruene. By whatever means it takes." As he turns to depart them, he cracks his knuckles through his gauntlets.
Indeed, the word is saying that even more citizens of the poorer districts have elected to join the meetings or even join the Commons as a whole in response to the City Watch late-night searches.

Baldur's Gate Lower City - Scene of the murder. (AI-generated)
It was a night like many others in Baldur's Gate. Silent, with the quiet broken only by soldiers searching citizens' homes for any clue related to the murders that were taking place. The tension was high, especially considering the threat of the demonic army at the gates, in Ulgoth's Beard.

A night like many others, until a scream pierced the night, waking the people of the Lower City with a start. Some of the citizens present would have recognized it as Lawrence Monlieu, a man from Beregost who had decided to leave the town and seek his fortune in Baldur's Gate.

The City Watch immediately moved to disperse the crowd that had gathered around the body and began searching for clues. Anything that was found would be handed over to the authorities.

Cries of discontent still rose from the crowd.

"You don't protect us at night!"

"All you do is trample on us!"

"You're not guards, you're just trained dogs!"

Eventually, these people were arrested and taken to the barracks for a day, to cool their heads and curb their desire to insult the City Watch further. The others dispersed and returned to their homes... but the atmosphere was heating up.

Baldur's Gate Lower City - Public Speech. (AI-generated)
After the events and turmoil of the previous day, the City Watch had decided that a public speech was just as important as affirming their presence and helping the citizens in the way only they knew how. For this reason, a Captain made his way to the Lower City and began his public address, gathering as many people as possible.
"Citizens of Baldur's Gate, hear my words.

My name is Aran Monlieu, Captain of the City Watch.
I know many of you are troubled, and rightfully so. In recent days, our city, which we have sworn to protect, has been invaded not only from the outside but also from within. The City Watch, your very own defenders, have violated the sanctity of your homes in search of dangerous assassins responsible for heinous crimes. I understand your anger and fear, and that is why I speak to you today, not just as your Captain, but as one of you.

Mistakes have been made, and we intend, as our sacred duty, to make amend.
I want to thank personally the Commons, who has shown this City where we were failing, in their own way.
For that, I want to assure you that these incursions into your homes will cease immediately, and those that have been arrested yesterday on the crime scene, will be released. Your rights will be respected, as it is our duty to do so. The hunt for these assassins will continue, but from now on, the searches will be conducted in a manner that does not compromise the safety and peace of your families. I promise you that these criminals will be found, and the victims, including some of our beloved fellow citizens, will receive justice.

We cannot afford to be divided in this time of great peril. An army of demons marches towards us from Ulgoth's Beard. Our enemy respects nothing we hold dear, and we risk losing everything if we do not stand together. I ask you, therefore, to remain calm and not give in to fear or anger. Baldur's Gate has faced threats before and has always emerged victorious, but only when we fought as one people.

I urge you, if you see or hear anything suspicious, to report it immediately to the authorities. The safety of this city also depends on you. We are the guardians of Baldur's Gate, but you are its beating heart.

Finally, I must inform you that former Captain Barn has stepped down from his position, a decision made to ensure greater security for all of you. Nothing is more important than your trust in the forces that protect you, and we will do whatever is necessary to earn it.

Together, we can overcome this crisis. Together, we can protect Baldur's Gate from any enemy, both within and without.

May Lathander guide us all.

Strength and honor, for our friends, for our dear and loved ones, for Baldur's Gate."
By the end of his speech, most of the crowd was applauding. Some remained skeptical, but no one spoke against.

A small flurry of apparently unconnected rumours emerge from the docks this very day.

House Divine that flurry of fashion has been spotted near the docks meeting with the House of cards to load fashion aboard a trading ship risking demons on a journey north. A larger than normal escort was observed mustering aboard. House Divine appeared to deliver an autumn fashion line incorporating the recently popular fire opals in the design.

A nearby breakfast yard was noticeably lying empty. Recently rented by Leaf Woodsky a prominent and learned recruit to the Commons and his three like minded staff. Leaf had been interviewed by the daily docker recently and at that time stated the way to educating the common person was over a good and fair breakfast and he further explained he hoped to encourage others to understand the principles of the Commons. The Daily Docker noted at that time the place was full of customers. However empty it now is and the disappearance of Leaf and his staff a mystery. Rumours range from dastardly deeds at the hands of the thieves guild to the staff escaping debt after some sort of ruse or other.

Among the dockers loading the ship rumours report local merchants have been approached for gold as some kind of protection dues. It is not clear who is behind this approach to offer protection The thieves guild are suggested along with other new groups from Cyric or from the shadow thieves.

In response to all these matters the Dukes have promised visible patrols over the next ten days and warned all miscreants will be detected and brought to justice.

Baldur's Gate Lower City - Public Speech. (AI-generated)
After the events that transpired a few days ago in Baldur's Gate, with the defeat of the mercenary guild Ironclad Blades and the subsequent cleansing of the city from the followers of Cyric, the Captain of the City Watch made another appearance in the Lower City to deliver his speech, which he would later extend to the other districts.
"Citizens of Baldur's Gate,

Today, I stand before you with immense pride, reflecting on the recent battle that tested our mettle and our unity. The Ironclad Blades, a formidable and ruthless enemy, sought to sow discord and chaos within our beloved city under the banner of the Black Sun and the Lord of Murder. Yet, in the face of such darkness, we stood together, stronger than ever before.

Let us take a moment to acknowledge the heroes of this struggle. The Flaming Fist, known for their bravery and strength; the City Watch, your steadfast guardians; the Commons Militia, whose dedication never faltered, and ideologies set aside to help in this defense; and the brave adventurers who joined us without allegiance to any guild or faction. Each of these groups, despite their differences, united under a common cause, to rid our city of the Ironclad Blades and restore peace.

This alliance was not a mere coincidence. It is proof to the fact that Baldur's Gate is at its strongest when we work together, when we set aside our differences and fight as one. This is our city’s greatest strength: our ability to unite, to stand shoulder to shoulder regardless of our backgrounds or affiliations.

In this spirit of unity, we have achieved a great victory. It is a victory not only over the Ironclad Blades but over the very notion of discord that seeks to weaken us. It is a reminder that every faction, every individual in this city, plays a vital role in our collective strength.

To those who might question the effectiveness of collaboration between diverse forces, let this victory serve as a reminder. The City Watch, the Flaming Fist, the Commons Militia, and all the adventurers: each of us contributes to the greater good. We are more alike than we are different, bound by our shared commitment to protect and serve Baldur's Gate.

As we move forward, let us not forget the power of our unity. Let us continue to support one another, knowing that together, we are invincible. It is this unity that will keep our city safe and prosperous, ensuring that no enemy, no matter how great, can threaten our way of life.

Thank you for your unwavering support and for standing together in this time of need. We are stronger as one, and together, we will continue to defend and cherish Baldur's Gate.

Strength and unity, for our friends, for our dear and loved ones, for Baldur's Gate."
By the end of his address, the crowd was applauding the City Watch, the Flaming Fist, and also the group of adventurers, including the representatives of the Commons Militia. Some, however, were clearly unhappy that the Commons had worked alongside the law enforcement... but that's another story that is yet to be told.

Baldur's Gate - explosion in Manorborn District. (AI-generated)
It seems there is no time to rest for Baldur's Gate. A mansion was set on fire in Manorborn district, apparently in the name of the Commons. While these terrorists were apprehended, a group of adventurers moved out to capture these enemies of Baldur's Gate. Under the charge of treason, sedition and multiple murders, they will be hanged soon, in about a tenday. The adventurers are thanked for their part, and now they're asked to let justice do its course. There seem to be no ties to the Ironclad Blades, despite some theories seem to travel across the districts.

The Common Threat

Word begins to spread around the city streets. Rumors of a crazed half-orc skulking around the docks and the manor districts. He speaks in long winded lies, peddling a "banned" book called the "Common Cause". He is said to be extremely dangerous, especially to those of the homeless.

One homeless tiefling woman is quoted:

"I've seen him! It was horrifying! I thought he was going to kill me. He and his group of thugs. There was a crazed woman wearing leaves and another that was stuttering about being an Ilmatari. I have never been so afraid in my life."

The merciless acts didn't seem to stop there. It is said he spit in a homeless person's hands when they begged for his gold. Those that stand up to him simply result in him laughing in their face, or worse. It was said he brutally beat an unnamed person who is currently recovering from a "Wagon accident" in the Shrine of Suffering.
