Background:
Arianna grew up in a decently rich merchant family in Waterdeep to loving parents. They sent her to a magic academy.
She was a sorceress amongst wizards, a typical story. She wasn't hesitant in showing off, beating them in Duels, and even sometimes doing better than them in studies because her hardy constitution allowed her to work and study for longer hours. She was sufficiently intelligent enough to become a wizard if she ever wanted to, and took a wizard-like approach in her learning. A prodigy who learned too fast and got into trouble because of it.
One night, the school was destroyed and the blame was placed on Arianna. She was set-up. It was magic way beyond anything the other students could have accomplished besides her. She was banished from the Academy. In reality, one of the students was a Red Wizard spy sent to sabotage their learning and he's the one who set her up.
Without anything better to do, she traveled South to the Friendly Arms Inn and adventured there for a while.
---
Arianna first arrived at the Inn, and became friends and adventuring companions with Endelyon, a bardess, and Willow, a warrior who transformed into a bear. She first joined the Inner Circle, a Mage Group infiltrated and sabotaged by the Dead Crows, an assassin's guild. Although she wasn't aware of this at the time.
Then the head mage took all of the guild assets and disappeared.
She fought in the Plague War of 1351 and became somewhat infamous for destroying Undead by leaving entire Farmhouses and farmlands burnt to a crisp.
As she became more powerful, she became part of a group wanting to establish the Academy of Mystic Arts, a magical school where she would be in charge of Evocation. To which the old wizard in charge gave up on the project and disappeared. She gathered up several mages to create the Academy herself.
This included Endelyon, her old friend. Endelyon wanted her to build the Academy within Baldur's Gate itself. It was an ambitious project, but she explained to Arianna that with her backing it, it would be possible. And also Sirion, whom she claimed was her apprentice. In reality, that was only for about a day.
Her efforts were harassed by Red Wizards who wanted nothing but to stop her from creating the Academy because it would compete with the Thayan Enclave.
She had a meeting outside with her designated head mages, and was scryed on by Endelyon, whom was outraged by their lack of safety precautions. Arianna took this hard and decided she wasn't fit to lead.
A half a year later, Sirion had successfully started the Guild of Magi. He was on a mission to get Mage-Duels a regular thing, and had very much succeeded.
They fought, and got to a point where they had about a 50/50 win loss ratio, slightly leaning towards Sirion. She won the annual Mage Duel tournament hosted that year when it came down to just her and him. But her coveted glory was trampled when Unseelie took over the arena and began an attack!
She left again at some point and only visits on occasion in case she gets bored.
---
Now she stays in Waterdeep with her warrior boyfriend. They go on adventures together in the Yawning Portal.
She may one day return.
Goals: She used to want a title, be famous, and find lots of treasure. Now her ambitions have gone quiet.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
She used to have dreams about becoming a dragon, but she decided she'd rather not delve too deep into her ancestry for power and remain as is.
She found a Forbidden book and sold it to Selengil, who still owes her his research notes as part of the bargain.
